Our Bantam ran off for three days once! she came home filthy, thirsty and starving! I'm glad yours came back safe too. That's one of the reasons we extended our run and keep our flock safe from adventures.
ok so this is Eugene (the big one, fingers crossed that she is an olive egger 4 months old) and Biscuit (the small one no clue what she is 2 months old). we got Eugene from a breeder who told us she is an OE, but I have only seen barred OE on this site. Biscuit was in a grow out pen with...
Pictures of the coop would help. But what we did was dig down 6"-12" at the base of the run. then we stapled 1/2" mesh strips cut to 12" around the coop leading into the trench. Then we filled in the trenches with the dirt we just dug up. now if critters try to dig in, they meet wire mesh...

I agree with not using a light. If it goes out in the middle of the night, the chickens have a hard time adjusting to the quick drop in temp. If you do get below freezing put vasoline on their combs and waddles so they are protected. with nine chickens I would think they would have no problem...
I want to plant grass in the run of my coop! San Antonio has passed a law against free ranging, so we extended our run to 88 sqft. I also plan on picking up edible flower seeds in the spring (nastarums, pansies, and other cheap yet fast growing plants) to grow in pots for the chickens. From our...
