Thank you both!
Interesting. I was aware of the gold/silver thing with hens vs roos, however I was under the impression that the silver is dominant over gold, and the blue satin has gold leakage not silver... I could very well be wrong though!
I know one of the black moms in there was a mix...
Hey genetic gurus!! It seems like I have genetic mysteries popping up all the time with my flock!
Today's is one that I've thought about for a long time and still have no direct answer.
The rooster in question is a silver partridge with leakage, regular Silkie feathers.
I hatched a lot of...
Thank you everyone!! I will post updates as the chick grows. We did have two chicks that are an orangey color that just hatched and are smaller than our other standard chicks, so I’m assuming that the Cornish the father of them!
New baby hatched today!
Besides being adorable, I have no idea who the parents are!
This spot pictured is the most notable black spot, though it does have a couple smaller ones on its back. I raise Paint Silkies and this sure looks like a Paint!
Dad is very likely a Barred Rock rooster. No...
Pictures don’t quite show her tips the best, here’s a very quick video that shows it pretty well! These were take a couple weeks ago, her silver has come in more

Yes! This chicks is absolutely stunning. I'm in love!
Initially, I took the hen who I suspect is the mother out of the pen because I didn't want any more flukes. But I seriously contemplating putting her back in because of how this chick turned out.
It is definitely from two Silkie parents...
It's been a while! The project stayed a stand still virtually all winter, but it is now starting up again. Our Cochin passed away in a bout of un-diagnosed illness that we had run through the flock... so we decided to cross our mottled split hen to our remaining black rooster. This guy has some...
Thank you all for your responses!!
I agree! Easter eggers would be fun because you can get the wild color varieties AND the colored eggs!
The goal would be to have them be just like their "original" breed, but with silkied feathers! Of course, maybe make them be a little extra friendly...
Wow it is old! Totally forgot I started this.
But yes! I have ended up buying from Silver Falls Silkies in Silverton, OR a couple times. She has lots of colors, but breeds to the standard and is NPIP.
I ended up starting our own breeding program too! We are not large yet like other breeders...
I had to dig a little bit, but I found some! The boys are a little young in this and their leakage got more pronounced as they got older. I don’t have them anymore but I bet they are beautiful!
The easiest way is to know the parents. Usually dominant whites now will only result from birds who came from a Paint x Paint crossing, and even then it's only a 25% chance of this.
But yes, if you don't know the parents the only sure way to know is based on what color chicks you hatch out like...
Thanks everyone for their opinions!
Moonshiner, you seem to be very well versed in genetics. I'm learning, so I'd love to hear specifics about what a black Silkie is? Initially I thought it was two copies of extended black, so E/E. But I think I heard somewhere that in Silkies it was e^b/e^b...
