Fermented organic broiler grower ok as chick layer supplement?

Here is the label! I had a hard time finding one, they get ripped off when transferring the bags but thankfully I still had one laying on the floor in the shed. Its good quality feed that I'd love to give to them as a supplement to the chick crumble but don't want to risk it. @AGeese - We have...

Fermented organic broiler grower ok as chick layer supplement?

Howdy folks! I've got about 120lbs of leftover 20% soy-free organic broiler feed from our last run of CX that I'd love to offer our layer chicks which are arriving today or tomorrow. I wanted to check with y'all to confirm they'd thrive and I'm not introducing anything they can't handle too...

Red rangers & chicken tractors with some free range?

We'd probably go with 60 or 70. That's excellent to hear, it would be nice if we could keep the tractors stationary-ish but I assumed we'd need to move them a little to encourage exploration but perhaps rangers are more like standard layers in that regard? My assumption based on some reading has...

Red rangers & chicken tractors with some free range?

Howdy folks, we had a great run of 60 CX in our tractors but we want to try Red Rangers come spring. Rather than restrict them to the internal footprint of our tractors (pictured below) full-time we'd love to allow them to roam about a 1/2 acre area during the day. The general area is clear...

Our DIY tractors & 60 CX.

Just a quick update, we lost 2 of the 60 birds and successfully processed the rest at 7 weeks on the dot. They averaged just under 5lbs. This is our first batch of meat birds and they seemed absolutely gigantic, I can't imagine what a 7lb bird would be like. We could only do 7 weeks because of...

    Fermenting Feed

Same here on the just enough with dry as backup. We've got a batch of 60 CX @ 6.5 weeks and they go through a 5G bucket (thick oatmeal consistency) of FF by mid afternoon, pretty much ignoring the dry feed when FF is available.

Olive oil film on fermented feed trough to speed daily cleaning?

Hey folks, our feed process has been working great thanks to all of the info and help we’ve found here. I was wondering if it would be safe to try wiping down their FF troughs with an ultra light coat of olive oil to allow the end of day dried FF specs to spray off easier. Shallow searching...

Clarity on CX sun exposure please?

@U_Stormcrow thanks for the guidance, we grew up in Wakulla & Tallahassee! Will do on the cycle shift next round, easier to keep them warm in the brooder to get a bit of an earlier start in the summer so they never have to deal with early July. Thanks again!

Clarity on CX sun exposure please?

Excellent and thanks for the feedback. I have 2x 70% shade tarps that I had planned on using to skirt the exposed areas from gusts as needed but I'll just drape them over the entire welded wire portion/exposed tops. Thanks again!!

Clarity on CX sun exposure please?

Hey folks, a portion of our tractors allow for full sun exposure and many of our CXs just plop down and bask away. While the temps are relatively mild ranging from mid 70s to high 80s during the day, the sun is intense. I don't want to limit their exposure if it won't cause any harm but I know...

Is this 12-on/12-off a fairly dummy-proof schedule for CX?

Oh sorry @Molpet, we’d never pull water! I should have mentioned that. They have 12G coolers feeding plasson bulbs in each tractor. It’s the dry feed we pull at night, by afternoon they’ve already gone through the fermented feed batch.

Is this 12-on/12-off a fairly dummy-proof schedule for CX?

Hey folks, we are working on our first batch of CX. We moved them from the brooder to the tractors we built just over a week ago. While in the brooder they had access to dry starter 24/7 with fermented feed throughout most of every day. We decided on 12/12 once moved outside primarily due to the...

Our DIY tractors & 60 CX.

Thanks! No idea on weight, it hadn't been much of a concern because we had planned on adding wheels but without that rear 2x4 catching on anything it slides well so far even in tall grass. We've had them outside for a few weeks before putting the chickens in just to weather the wood & make sure...

Our DIY tractors & 60 CX.

My wife, sons and I have been working on a pair of these tractors for a few weeks and finally transitioned our batch of 60 CX out over the weekend. So far so good although we've yet to run the gutter troughs for fermented feed. To date they've primarily been on FF, for now I'm just laying out a...

Any experience with Stromberg's line of pluckers?

Based on quite a bit of positive & genuine reviews I found on this and other sites I opted for the EX Plucker 169 on sale which is essentially the 151 with an extra .5 hp motor. Despite CCOnlyStore website listing them os out of stock I reached out and they said a new batch arrives by end of...

Review by 'figit' in article 'Raising Cornish X for Meat – The TRUTH'

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with CX. We've had layers for years and decided this will be the year we try broilers. For us CX seemed ideal yet given all of the negativity associated with them online we wrote them off. When it came time to finally decide, we...

Any experience with Stromberg's line of pluckers?

Howdy folks, we've got 60 CX about 3 weeks in doing great. We have been plucker hunting and what a wormhole I've found myself in... It seems like anything under $400 may or may not last beyond 2 years and even so the construction quality seems poor at best. Seems to be a large pool of...

    Help with enclosed/secured run location

Thanks a ton everyone, this is extremely helpful. To answer a few of the questions I've pulled them out below: 1. How cold does it get? Last year we hit a low of -10°. Record low is -22°. That said, the rhodies around us reach 15' tall and provide a nice break in the wind in the back. Here is a...

    Help with enclosed/secured run location

Thanks for the feedback! Bears are everywhere and our elevation is such that we get a lot of snow, more than anywhere else within a 100 mile radius. I hadn't considered drainage, the local landscaping place rented me a ditch witch to spread gravel on our driveway for $50/day and we've got a good...
