I hope no one minds me butting into the thread again...
I started posting here about 3 months ago when my daughters and I decided to try our hand at building an incubator and hatching chicks. We now have 5 little ones who are coming up on 7 weeks old, and while 3 of them will be going to...
And now there are 4! We have Justin Peeper, Fluff (aka Agrippa -- don't ask, it was my 10 year old's idea, but her sister wanted a more cutesy name), and 2 without names because they hatched in the middle of the night.
They make so much noise!
So, a miracle occurred and at about 9:30am, there was a small pip in one of the eggs. I was amazed since we had terrible temperature fluctuations and are working with a homemade incubator.
Justin Peeper, as my 'tweens' have named him, was born at about 3pm, and there is pipping in one other...
Aww, they look so cute, and you're right, it should be interesting to see what types of chickens you get!
What type of incubator do you have, if you don't mind me asking?
I'm on lockdown (day 20) over here, and I get a strong feeling that none of the 16 eggs will hatch. The eggs haven't moved around and there isn't any evidence of pipping. The temperature fluctuations have been so great and all over the map during the entire incubation period.
I think we...
Checking in again, but I think we are going to end up with a huge failure over here. My homemade incubator cannot keep a constant temp, and it's been all over the place. We check it often, so it has never been really high or low for long, but I think the temps are just too wild for this to be...
Our temps over here are fluctuating a lot and it's making me nervous. I guess it's the price I'm paying for having a DIY incubator. We'll candle in a few days to see if anything is happening, but until then, we'll be crossing fingers and praying. LOL
:::raising hand:::: I'm a newbie to all of this, attempting to hatch eggs as a homeschooling project with my kids. We put the eggs in last night, so we're on Day 1 over here.
Good luck to everyone who is just starting out!
Butting in again here...
Please someone assure me that my homemade incubator isn't going to burn down my house. I'm in the process of setting it up and was up quite a bit of the night worrying that maybe "going homemade" isn't for me. FWIW, I'm using a styrofoam box from Omaha Steaks with a...
NJChix, those are very cute chicks and it's making me want to get my project up and started ASAP.
Sorry about your loss. What a great name for a goose, though, and I hope you find another soon.
I'm on the border of Union and Middlesex counties, and close to Staten Island. I only did a quick search on Craigslist, but I'll search a bit more using those terms. Thanks!
I just noticed that there is a thread just for NJ -- yay! I hope no one minds me butting in. :)
I'm in the central-to-northern part of the state on the eastern side, basically a place where there we barely have room for humans, let alone chickens! I'm looking for a place to buy fertilized...
