Help with candling eggs, no idea stage of development

I have been just leaving my broody alone and listening for peeps the last couple days. Nothing. I was so sad. Then I went out this morning and thought I heard one in the back of the nest box. I lifted mama up a little hoping to see an external pip...but I saw 2 chicks!!! I got them out and...

Help with candling eggs, no idea stage of development

So exciting! Nice little flock you have there. How many eggs did you set? My Australorp/Wyandotte cross has a white speck on one side of her face but not the other. I think I'll name her Marilyn! :lau Still no new pips when I left for work today. Anxiously hoping for more chickie-babies...

Help with candling eggs, no idea stage of development

I watched about 100 videos on feather sexing day old chicks, so that's how I determined, with my untrained eyes, at least 2 are roos. I'll have to figure out how to post pics. I did get video of the 1st one hatching, that was really neat! She's, best guess, a black Australorp, silver laced...

Help with candling eggs, no idea stage of development

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, if black means internal pips, they would be DIS now since it's been 2 days since I candled them. I read once internally pipped they should hatch within 48 hrs. Is that right? I plan to give our broody another week to 10 days to see if anymore hatch, but...

Help with candling eggs, no idea stage of development

Ok y'all, I need some help. I have a broody hen(BLRW splash-big girl) She's been in her nest box for about a month now I'd guess, maybe a week or so more. At first we we're removing the eggs daily and shooing her out of the box b/c it's the favorite box for all my hens. Then she became very...

Hi all, @Daethen got tomatoes in the nesco, gonna try canning your sauce this weekend, just have to figure a way to measure how many cups of tomatoes I have! I just chopped them up and put them in the nesco (big one, takes up half my counter!) I can't wait to try it. I read bigz said the...

Hi all, So busy here. Starting my new shift in a week, can't wait as these early mornings are KILLING me! I don't know if I'm getting old or what, but I've been so tired I'm useless once I get home. Hopefully working 2nd will be a little easier on me. Chickens are laying a dozen eggs a day and...

Hi all, Can't believe the garden season is almost over! I am going to love seeing the chickens scratch around in there when we open the garden up to them :celebrate Got my first green egg today from one of my Easter eggers. It freaked my dad and DH out... I guess they didn't know there was such...

Kokosmom-at least your dog didn't kill the hen. One of our hens got too close to the dog's fence and 2 of my dogs got her through the fence. She didn't survive. Our dogs are all labs and we've had them since pups, but the chickens just arrived this year so their bird dog instinct kicked in...

Hi all, Been a while. Got my first weird egg last week...the shell was more like a thin layer of gelatin but perfectly formed. Odd chickens. My roosters decided now they want to fight so one rooster lost part of a waddle and some blood, but is otherwise ok. This morning the chicken coop...

Hi all, So busy here, hard to keep up! Welcome Madison! Are you getting chicks or pullets? What breed? You said "first 3", are you planning to add more later or just a first time chicken owner in denial about chicken math?! Jim is a great resource for all things chicken, but so is everyone...

A few of our chickens are laying sporadically. We've gotten a total of maybe 10 eggs over a week. High number is 3 in one day. It's exciting and a little intimidating! Whatever will I do with all those eggs when they all start laying? My garden is a mess, the tomatoes are way too close and...

...chickens are 17 weeks today, so yours should be laying soon too! The first egg was on the floor, the 2nd one was actually in a nest box...I feel so triumphant!!! That's all for now. Take care all, jean *tried to post this last night, but I guess it didn't work, so everything is now a day...

Hi kokosmom, I found this in the threads, hope it helps. 1 square foot of ventilation per chicken, but the more you can put in, the better. Another thread said they put ventilation in the roof where it meets the walls, 8x16 covered with hardware cloth... that is great ventilation as it goes...

Babylady-any word on the house? So frustrating dealing with people like that... I hope if this one didn't work out there's another (better) one soon. Jim-I agree, you just can't stay away from work! Daethen-I don't know how you've got tomatoes ripening, mine are there, but still green...meh. I...

Thanks for the responses on the chicken feed. My farm and fleet is on some kind of match thing with other stores and are now carrying lots more variety for feed (thank goodness!) So I'm going to switch to all flock feed after I get the first egg and put oyster shell out free choice (high enough...

So much going on with everyone! Y'all are so busy!!! As for us...well, I could use some input if you care to share any ideas. Chickens will be 16 weeks old next Monday. Trying to complete the nest boxes today. I read the article about sand in coops. I'd like to try it, but I have 1 concern...
