Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

At the moment I have one broody hen. She is a very large Light Sussex. She is sitting on 20 eggs and amazingly, covering all of them with ease. The eggs are a combination of Barnyard Mutts, Ancona, Brown Leghorn, Light Sussex, Buff Pekin and Mottled Pekin and are hopefully all fertile by a...

Well, after a long and eventful day the hen is settled in and ready for 21 days of incubation. She is sitting on a clutch of 20 eggs and covering them all with ease. The eggs are a mixed bag of barnyard mutts, Ancona, Brown Leghorn, Light Sussex, Buff Pekin and Mottled Pekin all over a Barred...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I just found my first broody of the season!!(We're in Australia so it is just into spring). She is our biggest hen in the flock, our Light Sussex, and I can't wait for her to hatch some eggs. We got our rooster a little over a month ago so the eggs should be fertile. This is my second broody...

    Breeding Pekin Chickens in AUSTRALIA.

I have two Pekins where I am, no roosters but one hen is a mottled hen and one is a buff pekin. One of my relatives have three Pekins at his place as well (2 hens, 1 rooster). Both of his hens are broody and at about day 18-20. I have been waiting for mine to go broody ever since but no action...

Thanks you so much for this. We have figured that it is probably live. We will probably do something in the next week or so.

    Lice and Mites

Our chickens have either lice or mites and I was wondering if this is an issue. If it is, is there anything I can do to get rid of them.

Got a Rooster. But not sure?

He has already been down to business with the lesser dominant hens but the dominant hens just run straight over and start pecking him when he does.

Got a Rooster. But not sure?

He has both hackle and saddle feathers but no spurs yet. When we let them out and he is alone then he will crow, but when he is in the pen with the rest of them he hasn't crowed yet. He is not getting beaten down to much either so hope all is going to be good.

Got a Rooster. But not sure?

He has been in there for about a day and none of the girls have had a rooster

Got a Rooster. But not sure?

I'm not sure how old the rooster is but he isn't fully grown yet and the hens have been laying for about a year. It is the rooster that has just been moved into the flock.

Got a Rooster. But not sure?

The problems is not only are the hens being aggressive towards him but whenever the dominant hens get close to him, he just up and runs away. It's like they are higher in the pecking order than he is?

    Plymouth Rock thread!

I'm so excited I just got my New Plymouth Rock rooster this morning. I don't think he is pure breed but oh well. This is him now

Got a Rooster. But not sure?

So you reckon the longer he is here the better he will get. Whenever one of the dominant hens gets close to him he just runs away.
