    Incubator?

One of the above posts says do not shine light directly on the eggs. Why not? I just built a homemade incubator from an old cooler and put some holes in it, a light and a container for water. I put in a dimmer switch to regulate heat and this has been working well for a week plus but I do have...

    Normal or ???

Possibly. I did see signs of digging around the run but this was just yesterday. I do have a live trap that I have out and have caught coons and possums in the past and this never seemed to bother the girls. But yes this is a possibilty.

    Normal or ???

About 2 weeks ago the girls went from laying 10-12 eggs daily to 4-6. Today we only got 2 eggs. Nothing has changed--food, water, light etc. We did have those 2 days of really cold weather but they slowed down prior to that. They are 10 months old and I have seen a few extra feathers laying...

How many eggs do you eat??

Armed with the fact that our eggs are supposed to have less cholesterol, more protein and just overall more healthy than store bought eggs, I have a question. About how many eggs a week do you folks consume? I would like to eat about a dozen a week and was hoping this is okay. For 45 years my...

    Broody Already??

Our hens will be 25 weeks old tomorrow. One of our white rocks has been laying for about 3 weeks. Today she stayed in a nest box for 2 1/2 hours. I gave her a little goose to see if there were any eggs under her. There were 2. I then tried to prod her out with no success. I then just picked her...

Preserving garden goodies for winter feeding

We are starting bags of produce to freeze--cuke skins, bean ends, zukes and pretty much any cutiings etc.--to chop and feed this winter. I do have a question about how much to give them now. I am leery to give them to much stuff for fear they won't eat their food but figure if they were free...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Got first egg yesterday and 2nd today. First I found in the run half covered with mud--probably layed late wed or thurs but found first thing fri morning. 2nd was in a nesting box that we put a couple fake eggs in last night. Think it was the same girl as both are the same size, shape and color...

    Rooster's responsibilties

One more question along these lines. Right now the rooster seems to be rather aggressive in his mating. However the hens do a good job of getting away when he attempts to cover them. Will the hens start to squat and be more receptive of the rooster's advances after they start laying?

    Rooster's responsibilties

The rooster and hens are the same age--16 1/2 weeks. The rooster is a rhode island red and as far as I can tell he is in good health. Started mating a couple days ago.

    Rooster's responsibilties

We have 1 rooster and 15 hens. From what I have read this seems to be a good ratio--any thoughts. Also how often a day can a rooster perform his duties? Does he know which hens he has serviced or is it random? And 1 more question how often does a hen have to be covered to get fertilized...

    Will we get eggs soon?

I didn't think him mating really meant anything in regards to egg laying. Just anxious for that first egg!!

    Will we get eggs soon?

This morning when I let them out into the run our rooster did what roosters do. They are 16 1/2 weeks old and he covered one of the white rocks. Of our 15 hens the white and barred rocks seem to be maturing fastest--red combs etc. Does this mean anything regarding how soon we will start getting...

Pros and Cons of straw or hay in the chicken run??

I've used grass clippings and leaves in a run area. Every couple months--or as needed--I rake it out and add to a compost heap and later add to the garden.

    Contents of scratch

I just opened a bag of scratch from Southern States and it had probably 50% whole kernels of corn. Is this normal? I always thought scratch had cracked corn. The whole kernels are quite large and my 12 week old girls won't eat them. Another question--I sifted out the kernels and was wondering if...

7 week olds not going into coop at dark

Good luck! We had chickens in the past but always got 10-12 week old hens. Never had problems with them coming in at night and roosting. Guess patience will be a virtue.

7 week olds not going into coop at dark

It's been about 5 nights and it isn't always the same girls--only a couple every night. I know they know how to go up as they do during the day. As far as scooting them in unfortunatly we have a long ramp. I guess I'll justkeep putting them up. It is getting cold and rainy the next 3 days so...

7 week olds not going into coop at dark

Some of our 7 week old chicks just hunker down at dark and don't go back into the coop. When we put them in the coop we didn't let them out for a few days. I also put in a lower roost thinking they would come into roost for the night. It has been cold at night so am leaving the heat lamp on...

    Mountain Laurel?

I've seen places that say Mt. Laurel is poisonous to chickens if they eat a lot. We have 16 chickens--currently 6 weeks old--and we will have food and water in the coop and in the run for them at all times. The run is 30' X 16" covered with leaves now and should have plenty of bugs etc. We will...
