Roberta's left side seems a bit swollen. Gladys's is not. Her resperatory symptoms are similar to sinus and chest congestion. The crusty nasal passages and one crusty eye are also consistant with a cold. I am so afraid of whatever this is, spreading to the rest of my flock. The two hens...
Yes she is like gasping for breath with her mouth gaping open. I don't know much about that kind of worms. I check their poop every day for signs of anything out of the ordinary.
My silver wyandotte hen Roberta is sick. She has been squaking a loud odd call for the past week or so but otherwise seemed ok. Three days ago I looked her over real good and noticed a yellowy discharge from her nasal holes and one eye was a bit crusty. She also felt thin. I brought her in...
I have a roost built into each corner of my pen. I have extended my pen twice so there are a bunch of corners and angles. I just took a 2x4 and screwed into onto the middle brace which makes like a triangle. I also have three different feeders that get moved around. Two of them are just...
Of course we name them! All of them. Laverne, Sylvia, Roxy, Penny, Maxine, JR, Roberta, Thelma, Louise, Lola, Delila, Wilma, Betty, Lillian, Gladys, Daisy, Ursula and Greta. Only two are the same breed (Barred Rock) and they are different ages so we can tell them apart. RIP Gloria, Tweety...
I have four nest boxes stacked one ontop of the other. My girls have no problem getting in them. There is a roost near the top one but they use of all of them. I have silkies and they can get up to all of them also.
I have a large run that was all dirt. When it rains half of it would get muddy ( it is covered with wire mesh ). I added about a ton of sand ( that was a lot of work! ),but alas, NO MUD, ever!! It doesn't get dusty either. I rake the whole run, dirt and sand, about once a month.

My videographer add no idea what she was in store for. My 14 year old son was my assistant. I was so nervous cutting the skin in the beginning, but when I got into the crop and during the stitching I was fine. The audio is really funny. Sylvia (the chicken) was sooo good...
I performed this surgery on my cochin hen. I used dissolving sutures which I got from my vet. First I stitched the crop closed, Then I stiched the outer skin seperately. I applied bacitracin (first aid oinment) to the incision. I gave her water soluable antibiotics for two days (she didn't...
The McMurray one is more expensive then the others I saw which ran about $180.00. I set aside a bit of cash from my tax return for this. When I go away camping for a few nights here and there in the summer, I want to know that the girls go out early at day break. Not when my helpful neighbor...
Was wondering if anyone has purchesed an automatic door opener over the internet and if so which model. I do not have electric in the coop (besides an extension cord for water heater). I would need battery or solar. I built my coop myself but I do not want to dable in electrical stuff. Thanks.
When my mare was 27 I had to make the hardest decision of my life. She was very arthritic in her legs, had cushins disease and a large mass on her shoulder. She required lots of expensive meds for the cushins that I could not afford. I also had two small children. She was miserable and...
Hello fellow NH resident. I am amazed at how well chickens can handle the cold, but I felt bad when it got to -7f here the other day. They just aren't used to it. I really didn't want to add heat because we do lose power, also it is not good for them to have daylight 24/7. I took the 250...
Measure, measure and then measure again! I can't stress that enough! I learned the hard way and wasted lengths of good boards and fencing. That includes the width of the wire also. I had a hard time securing the wire fencing to the roof on my first pen. The second time I built the roof frame...
I used pressure treated 4x4's for the posts of my 10x20' run spaced 5' apart with 2x4's for bracing inbetween. It is very sturdy. This also eliminated a lot of cutting and wasted lumber. I used heavy 2x3"wire to cover it (sides and top).
I can't sress enough the importance of the posts being...
I was able to get disolving sutures from my regular small animal vet for FREE. I explained what I was about to do and thought they would think I was crazy. But when they called back she said come on down. The emergency vet I spoke with out of Concord, NH the previous week also encouraged me...
The whole thing took about an hour and 15 minutes. It didn't seem that long at all while it was going on. I had to keep stopping while I was cutting. I also took my time stitching so that it would be nice ans tight. The needle was so small it was difficult to work with.
Sylvia is doing...
UPDATE: Gloria is doing really well. She spent a couple of hours outside yesterday (day 8 post-op). Her crop was nice and flat this morning so I put her back out today for the night. It seems that she was second on the totem pole before her indoor stay and was intent on remaining there...
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=435506 Check this out. I just went throught the same thing with my cochin. I performed the surgery as a last option and She is alive today because of it. The stuff that came out of her was unbelievable! There was no amount of massage...
