Choose 3 to Breed and Why

It's interesting to hear that Russian Orloffs are such good layers; I didn't think that they would be. How many eggs would a pullet average per week once she is laying steadily?

Choose 3 to Breed and Why

Hi All, Thought it might be fun to hear which three breeds people would pick if they had to choose three to breed and why they would choose them. For me it would be the Coucou de Malines for their meat, Bresse, also for their meat but for eggs too and finally the Chantecler for their eggs...

    Crossing Breeding & Back-Breeding

Thanks @eatwhatyougrow ! That gives me a good idea of how far I would have to back-breed to get what could be for all intensive purposes be considered a pure bred at the time that document was written. I'm assuming that today it would still hold water.

    Meat and egg chickens

Sylie's suggestions are all solid choices for dual purpose breeds. I own Buff Orp x RIR and have been impressed with the growth of the cockerel but haven't seen any eggs from the pullet yet so I can't comment on her laying; however, I have a RIR hen from the same line of RIRs that contributed to...

Lofty Duck House on Pond for Muscovies

It's good to hear that it could work out. Would a roosting bar inside the coop make it more attractive to them? I use my lumberjack's axe to get through the 3' of permafrost and then shovel the last foot!

    Crossing Breeding & Back-Breeding

Hi All, Would anyone be able to provide me with a link or some information on what the accepted practice is for cross-breeding and then back-breeding to re-standardize the offspring? The fine looking White Rock rooster pictured below caught my eye and peaked my interest... Is it advisable to...

Lofty Duck House on Pond for Muscovies

Thanks for the reply Miss Lydia! If they were to sleep on top they would at least be safe from predators other than owls. Glad to hear that they tend to sleep up high like chickens or turkeys rather than tucking themselves away on the ground. Whether or not I can attach them to the little house...

@lpatelski what is your feeding schedule for breeder CX? 1/4 cup per day?

Lofty Duck House on Pond for Muscovies

Hi all! The last few days I’ve been digging out a pond in my yard in anticipation of getting a trio of Muscovies this year. I’d like to keep them in a duck house on the pond but I’ve read that unlike chickens they may not always return to their house at dusk and I won’t be able to close them...

What breed of chicken should I get

Another option to check out if you're interested in a dual purpose bird that leans towards meat production is the Malines. Check out the breed focus here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/chicken-breed-focus-maline.990483/

Anyone hatch out their own meat birds?

@Minky in Canada you have some good options for slow growing heritage meat birds, Coucou de Malines come to mind in Ontario as I know there are at least two good breeders in your province but you could also look at Bresse or LF White Cornish.

    Economics of Micro Scale Hatcheries

@Sydney Acres - Thank you for the response! There is definitely a lot of merit in having two incubators available so there will likely be another incubator in my closet by the end of 2018. As for the market, I'm taking a bit of a leap of faith with the Malines... They're gaining popularity but...

    Economics of Micro Scale Hatcheries

Hi all, I'm establishing a spiral breeding program for Coucou de Malines and hope to be selling chicks and eggs by Spring 2019. I'll be spending the 2018 breeding season getting my parent stock in order but hope to start seeing some returns in 2019. First of all, I would be doing this even if...

    Best heritage meat chicken?

"Heritage" and "Dual Purpose" are not mutually exclusive terms when it comes to poultry in Canada so I'm not sure what's meant by that but I can tell you that I have seen some very impressive Barred Rock lines in my part of Canada that are true to the SOP and great producers of both meaty...

    Best heritage meat chicken?

If you're in Canada there are excellent lines of Coucou de Malines available here, primarily in BC, Ontario and Quebec. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/chicken-breed-focus-maline.990483/
