I have:
easter eggers
sumatras
australorps
new hampshires
rhode island reds
wyandottes
leghorns
buff orps
barred rocks
I also have
bourbon reds
royal palms
and
cayugas
black east indies
mallards
roens
swedish
khaki campbells
welsh harlequins
magpies
pekins
and I just got two...
Not chickens, but i didn't want to break this into a bunch of separate posts.
Looks like I got a bunch of Roens or Mallards, which is awesome.
What breed do you think the turkey poults are (so much for variety, all the ducks and all the turkeys are one breed).
Then I got two mystery goslings...
Correct f I'm wrong, but I have heard gamebird hens make excellent broodies. is that true? I have a hodge-podge flock anyway, so she will be a welcome addition.
I might be picking this chicken up tonight-owner says it's crazy and he wants it gone. Five months old, hasn't crowed or laid eggs yet. He says it's a medium-large bird.
I have an easter egger exactly the same color, but Xena is bearded. Is this a game hen of some sort? He said s/he can almost...
Okay, I breed rabbits, so I'm going to try and say this in terms that make sense to everyone, using examples of rabbits.
For example, if I breed a Black rabbit to a Blue rabbit-it works the same as breeding a Black Swedish to a Blue Swedish-blue is bb and black can be Bb or BB-meaning you get...
I felt so bad for the guy we got them from-we traded three breeding rabbits for six pullets-he sent me pictures of the ones he had. He paid for "Ameraucanas" and had Easter Eggers. He paid for "all pullets" and I counted five roosters just from the two pics he sent me. I mean sickle feathers and...
I got six Easter Eggers ("Ameracaunas" according to the person I got them from) and this one has me guessing. They were all supposed to be pullets, but I keep doing a double take on this one. It only has a single row pea comb, and isn't bright in the face at all (I have a roo in a brooder who is...
that's what I was curious about-I have hatchery stock and was wondering what the laying expectancy usually is for them. I am shocked to learn that my leghorn isn't laying, but my barred rocks are still chugging along.
At what point do you decide to cull non-laying hens?
I have a few that I haven't seen an egg out of in a few months now. They will be 2 years old in May. I plan on giving them until mid-summer (since our weather has been godawful recently) to pick back up.
But they are noticeable eggs-my...
I don't have a turner or a fan, and it's in a closet in the room, so no sunlight either.
My hova bator does the same thing, to a lesser extent. It's never gone above 105.
Still turning them with my fingers crossed. I'll be candling on Sunday to see what I ended up with. The incubator is still fluctuating like crazy, I have an alarm set to check it every few hours all night.
Yep, I always feed oyster grit. it wasn't the shell that was weak though, it was the egg itself. The yolks were really pale and easily broken and the whites were watery.I put them back on Dumor and within a week the problem fixed itself. Now, once my ducks started laying they got switched to...
the flock raiser was absolutely worthless for my chickens-the growth rate of chicks was terrible and the eggs I got were weak and watery-most of my yolks were broken before I cracked the egg. flock raiser will never be fed to my laying birds or chickens again.
Last year we started some ducklings. Lost several due to a niacin deficiency in my feed. Added niacin and changed them to purina flock raiser from dumor chick starter. Everyone thrived on that.
I'll be getting goslings and turkey poults in june and was wondering if there are special...
We have had successful hatches even after the incubator spiked or dropped dramatically. It's usually only a problem during the last week if it does that-I get a lot of crooked toes on those hatches. Keep us posted-you're probably still in the clear!
What on earth is WRONG with this bloody thing?
I had a Hova-Bator all year last year. I learned the "triple thermometer" method to ensure that wacky thing stayed stable. Well, this year I ordered a farm innovator still air.
Three thermometers.
THis thing, in a room with no draft and no...
I never said they were fat, or gluttonous, or growing too fast to keep up with. I said they were unhealthy by far in comparison to any other breed I have raised and generally disgusting birds.
But I have been off this site for a while and suddenly am reminded that nobody is allowed to say that...
2 sq ft per bird for week old chicks? Makes no sense that they would be this pitiful when I have brooder triple the quantity of an array of other breeds in the exact same brooders.
I wanted to love the Cornish X. I really did. I read about the differences in caring for them as opposed to other breeds of chicks.
So they started fermented feed, extra vitamins and probiotics in their water, they aren't fed 24/7, we pull feed for 12 hours.
I was unprepared for how...
I have a brooder full of these guys in my bedroom right now. They are laid back chicks, very friendly and alright with being handled frequently. I was overwhelmed by how much they can consume, I always have a pan of feed for new chicks and at less than a week old I am already limiting their...
