Things I have learned since getting chickens...

I've learned that one of the most precious things I'll ever see is a banty cochin rooster with a chick getting a piggy back ride down the coop ramp. One of those times I so wish I'd had my camera.

BYCer's Grandfather's concoction for egg laying jumstart

I saved this post from Justusnak--could it be this? If your hens are not laying..and you are not seeing lice/mites...get a bucket of corn. He always used a 5 gallon bucket. NOT cracked corn, hard feed corn. Fill the bucket with the corn, and add water to just cover the top of the corn. Add one...

My girls have COMPLETELY stopped laying! WHY? What can I do?

My girls have really cut back too. I'm thinking its a combo of less light and molting. I have about 40 layers and they are giving me less than a half dozen a day. I hope its not a snake--- I have seen a 6 ft black snake in one our buildings. Do black snakes like eggs? He has been here for...

Could you take a quick survey to help me with my Master's degree?

Thanks again everyone! I understand there are some issues with the Red Cross, but I didn't get to choose my client! That's part of learning I suppose--you have to know how to deal with the good and the bad--like anything else.

Could you take a quick survey to help me with my Master's degree?

Hi all, I haven't been on the boards quite as much lately because I'm in the last course for my Master's degree. yea! Anyway, I'm having to create a comprehensive marketing campaign for the American Red Cross. As part of my research I have to conduct a survey about blood donation and...

I can't give them away! What to do with so many roos??

Yep, I'm afraid trimming down is what's happening! I wouldn't mind feeding them through the winter if I had a coop to where I could separate the boys from the girls--sort of a bachelor pad! But I don't have anything to use for that. I'm going to check with the 4H now.

I can't give them away! What to do with so many roos??

You all are the best! I have tried Craig's list, but it isn't very active in my area. Most people use the Bulletin Board (local free ad paper). In the past I haven't had any trouble at all--maybe it has something to do with the economy. I will get some current pics tonight and post tomorrow...

I can't give them away! What to do with so many roos??

I know I should be able to butcher these guys, but I've been through that before and I just can't do it. I live in the Mid Ohio Valley and have been advertising for the last 3 weeks to find new homes for my extra roosters. This past week I offered them for free and no calls came in. I have...

    My dog is stealing eggs

My dog Trailor is guilty of the same thing. We only have 1 hen that roams the yard--old roo doesn't like her and all of the other chickens are locked up. I swear I have seen Trailor follow Penney around and wait for the "I laid an egg" cackle. The next thing you know, she's laying in the...

Post Office would not ship my eggs!

I had the same thing happen to me! Finally after she called 3 other supervisors she agreed to ship. She kept saying they couldn't ship live animals from this zip code!

The molasses remedy works wonders! I had 1 chick with PB and it cleared it right up--used that and the oil. Great info to know!

I think I may have a problem egg--what would you do?

I have 18 bantam eggs in the hatcher--today is day 21. I candled them on the 18th day and they appeared fine--full and nice air pockets. These are shipped eggs. Last night I noticed that one looks like it has pipped, however, it has this oozy stuff around the pip. Is this egg going to...

This might be the first time this question has been asked... UPDATE =D

I have 8 out of 35 birds now broody. Of course they decided to do this AFTER I bought 2 more incubators! All of these but 1 are hatchery birds--2 partridge cochins, 2 buff orps, 1 cuckoo marans, 1 jersey giant, 1 barred rock and 1 little mixed, 1 eyed banty girl. Except for the banty, all...

Check out Mom, Dad and the kids!

I had to move Romeo and Checkers and the kids to new digs this weekend. Somehow one of the chicks got out and went wandering. I don't know how he did it but Romeo flew out of their enclosure and went after the little chick. I looked out the window and there he was following it through the...

    Blue Andalusians??

I have an ongoing hatch of blue andalusians and have noticed that some are very light silver, some are black and some are sort of mixed. Is this because they are like anything else blue--some will be blue, some black etc. or does this indicate sex in some way? TIA and talk to me if you have...
