    Broody hen hard to break!

Thanks for your reply! The flock is just over 18 months old and this is her first time going broody. She is actually the second girl to go through this. The first was one of the blackstars and 3 days in the cage fixed her but it was about 10 degrees cooler.

    Blackstars not laying yet

Just an update. The black stars started laying with fury! Still the bottom of the flock but doing very well. They seem to be the meat eaters of the group. Only interested in high protein snacks. Eggs are very large and constant. One went broody in early spring but came back to normal in three...

Comment by 'mamm7215' in article 'Coopdelisles Chicken Coop'

Awesome coop! And I thought mine had a chicken condo! One thought though, might want to add some very strong hardware cloth behind that lattice and dug about 12 inches into the ground on an angle. It is really scarey what predators are capable of, especially when you are away.

    Broody hen hard to break!

Have a broody cuckoo maran who is not responding to the broody breaker. FYI the broody breaker is a large rabbit cage up on blocks. There is food and water but no bedding, mesh floor. This normally works pretty quickly but this stubborn gal has been in it for a week now and no luck. As soon as...

What Treats Did Your Chickens Get Today?

Grapes. My girls LOVE grapes. And potato chips (very small amounts, very rarely). I don't usually give them chips at all because of the salt but if I'm outside and they see me munching some chips they actually jump up and try to chomp them out of my hand. They get grape treats almost daily...

    Blackstars not laying yet

Thanks everyone. The article on lighting was helpful too. I'm going to need a timer. Had the girls locked up in the coop/ run for the last week as heavy rains have hit. Even mid day is gloomy! Only the dominant bird is laying. Her sisters are starting to molt too so they definitely won't be...

    Blackstars not laying yet

We got them as pets/ layers too. They are free to roam the yard and are on a 18 % layer pellet. They have oyster shell available at all times. We also treat them with banana, grapes, ground beef ( raw & like once a month ) pumpkin and of course the oatmeal yogurt mash with some scrambled egg. I...

    Blackstars not laying yet

Hi everyone. We have two beautiful black star pullets that we got at 8 weeks old in July. They are still not laying. Wondering if it is the fact that fall has hit. Our other three cuckoo marans have stopped laying too except for Serci, the dominant hen. Is this normal for later hatched birds...

    Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

Yes completely normal! The condition of the eggs will tell you if she's getting enough nutrition to keep laying. Nice hard shells good color and shape. The others will start when ready. For most breeds it is anywhere between 18 and 24 weeks! With my ladies, egret started right about 18 weeks and...

    Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

Being a stay at home mom with only 3 hens and watching " chicken tv " pretty much every morning, it's pretty easy to know what each bird is doing. Call me crazy but it seems to me that the egg song for my ladies is more a " hey get out of here I need privacy!". Seriously, the girls egg laying is...

    Soft Shelled Egg Questions

Dealing with soft shell issues here too. Thank you everyone who posted here, because now I'm not so worried! Seems I could be dealing with a combination of issues.... 1) the ladies are young, only 5 months and have just started to lay. 2) it has gotten really hot here, into the 90's. 3) Just...
