Thanks everyone! This is quite helpful and main reason I'm this forum, to think through things and share ideas. I might in fact cull a few of the hens. I have 14 right now and I do think their skiddishness was affected by the rooster but maybe not the brooding issues and feather pecking...
It's a big mix. Some are white like a Leghorn mix, Olive Egger mix, dark brown hens.... It's 4 different ones in a flock of 14. I'm sharing the rooster messed them up. What do you think?
Hello Friends,
I've had lots of broodiness this spring and now into the summer. I usually have been taking the brooders out and putting them into the small coop on 'lock down' with water and food for 2-3 days which seems to 'cure' them. However, I've had 2-3 hens that just seem to go back to...
Well, that's too bad. I don't presume to tell you what to do but it sounds like he needs rehomed somewhere else. I will share this: I had years of hens without any rooster and the girls were happy, friendly, fairly nice to each other, and productive. This last flock I hatched and arranged...
Okay BigBlue, thanks for the article! My little coop is elevated, so lots of air flow underneath it. They aren't 'acting' broody with sounds etc. so I'll give it a try today, they seem to have calmed down. We shall see.

These three are 'blocking' all three laying boxes and make it a hassle to collect eggs but I've been collecting the eggs and getting them out for a little bit to take breaks. Thanks for the info ideas, I did put a chick waterer and feeder in my little coop. I will give them another dary or two...
Hello friends,
I've had four broody hens this spring, first year hens. One I helped by locking in the smaller coop and she stopped after a couple days. Then, two more started brooding, then another, like it's spreading among the girls. I take them out often and lock in the smaller coop but I...
Well, I was just replying to the Solhen. quote, that there is evil in all of our hearts. Are we putting quotes onto our posts or is the BackYard Chickens website adding random quotes? Why are we getting quotes on posts that aren't related to chickens?
There is one barred plymouth rock, one salmon faverolle, the rest are various layers in a bunch of chickens from Meyer Hatchery, it was 'production pullets' or something like that with various colors so I think they are mixed breeds.
