Chickens! Our West Austin coop build - Lots of photos!

Finally an update! It took awhile to get the run up due to only getting to take half-days here and there for the past week but finally our chickens have a lot more room! We used painted treated lumber next to the ground for when we decide to fill the run with sand. The entire run has a mesh...

Chickens! Our West Austin coop build - Lots of photos!

Thanks all! I need to update the progress soon but life has been hectic. We have all the framing up for the covered run. Now it is just a matter of getting things painted, screened, and the roof on! The girls are doing well. Bit "cooped up" but getting bigger by the day.

    Coop build, moral support needed

It looks like a good start and should be a very nice coop when finished! We started our coop at the same time as receiving our chickens which I will say put a lot more pressure on getting things done. We got them in by the 6 week old mark and I will tell you that it is a great feeling having...

    Do chickens peck/eat weatherstripping?

From what i've noticed they will peck at anything that contrasts with the environment, that is shiny, or red. The point at which they KEEP pecking at it is if they are getting somewhere such as pulling insulation out, or pulling a bead of caulking up and eating it. I caulked quite a bit of our...

    chickens in track housing

As long as you meet city and HOA requirements (if you have them) you should be fine. I would avoid a rooster if at all possible to minimize any potential angst from neighbors. Good luck!

Dark pink comb at three weeks?

UPDATE PHOTOS! So, this is how our young chickmunk has progressed thus far. It seems to hold its head back kindof cocked back and is very quick to chest bump things and square off. At one point it chest bumped the water bottle as my wife set it in the brooder. Pretty funny! Is it still early...

Chickens! Our West Austin coop build - Lots of photos!

I may be talking to myself here but I have updates! Is the paint color scaring everyone off? :) The biggest one probably is that our chickens are finally out of our bathroom which means that the coop sans run has been finished for the most part minus some trim. Here it is in current...

Acroponics Can be for chickens too not just Talapia and Ducks/Geese

I really love the concept and its something I'd like to try when I get ducks one of these days. If its not too cold where you are try using some crayfish to help clean things up that the plants might not get! My hope would be that it could become pretty self sustaining. Well done!

Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

Thanks! I'm quite happy with everything so far. As for the lock we will probably take your advice and use a latch with a carabiner like we did on the other sections. Our thought was due to how heavy the drawer is that a raccoon would have a pretty hard time getting it open and wedging himself...

Poop board convert *warning-graphic/gross poop pictures*

Hi all. I wanted to give an update to my sliding poop drawer. We got a chance to paint it and put the trim/handles on and it looks pretty nice! View of the drawer closed from the outside. View of the drawer open. Pretty low profile.

Chickens! Our West Austin coop build - Lots of photos!

Today I managed to build the frame for the door and my wife started getting the paint on it so we can put the siding on and hang it. My other major accomplishment of the day was finishing the face of the poop board drawer. Over all I like how it looks! View of the drawer closed. Note the...

Chickens! Our West Austin coop build - Lots of photos!

So finally an update! We worked a lot on the coop last weekend and this weekend but I decided to wait until this one to show any more photos. We are going to do some work on it tomorrow as well. Our roofing came in so that will probably be installed next weekend because we will run out of time...

need advice on leveling the coop

The above way can work fine but it may be more work than you need to do depending on your design. Here is my current build. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/698807/chickens-our-west-austin-coop-build-lots-of-photos/ There is about eight to twelve inches of difference between corners. If you...

    Chicken open and closes mouth

My point was that they were eating something not normal or easily digestible. Have you checked its throat for gape worms? They are rare but who knows.

    Chicken open and closes mouth

At about two to three weeks our girls started doing something similar and still do to a point. I self diagnosed with the idea of worms but after observing that they would do it most after eating pine shavings or other non food items I just figured it was them coping. They still do it a bit but...
