Hen With Really Weak Feathers and Soft Eggs

Oh I'm sorry for the late reply, I never log in here. Gotta update the notifications Ettinger to include quotes! Yes, we took her to the vet to be put down once it got too bad and she had Egg Yolk Peridontitis. It's a condition where the yolk of an egg escapes the oviduct into just the loose...

    Just got baby chicks! Pics!

I have tried to learn the difference between Ameraucanas and Easter Eggers but I can't figure it out.

Official BYC Poll: How Long Have You Been Raising Chickens?

I'm at 10 years. Every year I say "no new chicks this year" and every single year I get more 🤣. My oldest hen, Buckbeak is 5 years now. :) Here are my 3 new babies:

Aw welcome to BYC! That looks like an Ameraucana chick to me, by the way. This is my Ameraucana chick: Chickens get lonely as they are flock animals, so I would consider getting at least one more chick so yours can have some company :).

    Just got baby chicks! Pics!

I got 3 little female chicks from Southern States yesterday to add to my flock of 5. They are doing quite well! One Ameraucana, I think I'm gonna name her Tzipporah: One Buff Orpington, I'm gonna name her Sappho: And one Blue Plymouth Rock, name as of yet undecided:

Should I hatch eggs and maybe get overrun with roosters...?

Yeah, I'm a vegetarian, so a no go on eating the extra roos lol. I'm researching hatcheries now for mail order chicks. Any suggestions on a reputable one?

Should I hatch eggs and maybe get overrun with roosters...?

It also makes you wonder how flocks deal with it in the wild! I mean rooster birth rates are 50% and there's no humans to cull them. Huh.

Should I hatch eggs and maybe get overrun with roosters...?

Huh I hadn't heard of a separate roo flock. Wouldn't they fight? And yeah that was what I'm leaning towards. Shame though chicks are so cute :(

Should I hatch eggs and maybe get overrun with roosters...?

I have 3 bantam hens, 1 bantam roo, and 1 standard hen. They live in a 20x20 moveable run by day and sleep in a 6x4 coop by night. I usualy let the one standard hen free range. I am considering letting one of the bantam hens incubate 3-6 eggs and get chicks. I am 100% not willing to cull any...

    Black Spot on Wattle

I completely feel your pain about that vet bill. It hurts when it can't be done. I had a hen a few years ago who got attacked by a dog, and she had a really really bad limp, to the point of not being able to move, for a few months. I was much newer to being a chicken parent and couldn't tell...

    Black Spot on Wattle

I agree with Eggcessive about the wattle, but I'm still concerned about the limping. Is the limp really bad? Have you checked her feet for bumblefoot? There may not be a visible scab, so you may have missed it in your appraisal, but the normally soft and squishy sole of her foot would feel firm...

    Should Head-Flicking be a worry?

Yes, I got these four bantams in December and when I got them they had an AWFUL case of scaly leg mites, I treated for a few weeks and it went down, but I got impatient and stopped treatment. I just noticed some gunk on one of their legs, so I decided to do a whole new round of treatment on all...

    Should Head-Flicking be a worry?

Does anyone know if this might be indicative of an inner-ear problem? It feels like a strech, but none of my other chickens are doing this.

    Should Head-Flicking be a worry?

Thank you! Nothing appears to be tickling her, but it could be insects. This set up is actually a temporary isolation crate for treating some mites. Their roosts in the normal coop are 2.5" diameter branches. Thanks for the suggestion though!

    Should Head-Flicking be a worry?

My bantam has been flicking her head a lot lately and also her head is looking a bit pale. Her comb is purple because it's been dyed with gentian violet. Here's a video of the flicking. Should I be worried?

    Diatomaceous Earth + Petroleum Jelly?

Thank you for all the responses! I have switched to using Bag Balm instead of petroleum jelly, as I have some on hand. I decided not to use gasoline or DE in any way. The birds are looking good, they just need time for the new scales to grow in. Thanks again.

    Diatomaceous Earth + Petroleum Jelly?

I'm treating some bantams for scaly leg mites, and have decided to go with the petroleum jelly method. They've been isolated getting the petroleum jelly for about a week and I'm getting kind of impatient. I've heard that diatomaceous earth (DE) can be helpful for external parasites, but I've...

Can I use Tylan 50 to treat bumblefoot?

I use a half cc of Tylan 50 (injected) for a standard size chicken if the Bumblefoot is really bad. I brought a hen to the vet once and the vet gave me prescription antibiotic pills, but you can't buy those yourself. Also, if you still feel bumble pus inside the foot, you have to get it out...
