The past few hours have been rough for Velma. I went to go feed her at 7:15 this evening and she had full blown seizures on me; one right after another. Flopping around and it scared the crap out of me! So, I did not tube feed her and just watched her until she died at 7:45 tonight. My oh my how...
Ok ladies and gents, I am not sure what is going on with Velma, now. She is back to not eating, but drinking some on her own, and I am still tube feeding her. And, she has started scratching her head excessively to where she is making open wounds on her head. She has also gone back to the...
Just wanted to share a quick YES with you all! Velma has been "wing" seizure free today. YES!!! I have stayed home all day today and have kept her by my side watching her like crazy and no seizure as of yet! Still a little twitching of the head, but even this is improving. Now, to get some...
Thank you for your kind words. I am trying to get as much rest as possible throughout the days and nights, but it is hard when you have a lot going on. After this week, things will get a little smoother for our household. School will be out for a month! Thank goodness too! lol
No, she is not...
I am most sorry for not updating. Things have been busy needless to say. Trying to get things in order for Christmas, finals for school and still treating my Velma. Velma is still ALIVE! I am so thankful, too. We had a very rough week last week and throughout this past weekend, but this week she...
I cant seem to find my list... So I will try to remember everything off the top of my head:
-bloody green poo- not bloody anymore
-diarrhea
-sleepy
-lethargic
-puffed up- no longer
-pupils not dilating
-twitching
- making weird noises- no longer
-eye swelling- just on one side now and it is...
Oh, I am thankful the power did not go out. It's been cold and icy, but still have power! Velma is.... I'm not sure... she is gaining small amounts of weight from the tube feeding and will eat and drink small amounts on her own. She is still emaciated looking; however, she is moving around a...
She's still hanging in there. The tube feeding is going a little smoother (she's not so freaked out about it now). She isn't puffed up anymore, but still real lethargic with droopy wings and downward pointed tail. She is drinking on her own. Every time I give her fresh water mixture she drinks...
For those of you who care or are following Velma's progression here is today's update:
She's still alive! I cannot believe it and with the tube feeding she has gained 30g today. I am happy with any weight gain. It might not be much, but right now anything counts! Her poo is a little more...

Through reading a couple of the studies on this website, the process of cross-contamination is different in chickens than in turkey's and this is good to know. It spreads faster in turkey's than in chickens. This helps to put my mind at ease a little, if it is indeed blackhead we are dealing...
I was thinking the same thing, actually. I plan on doing some research on it this weekend when school and life is a bit slower. I talked to a friend of mine from Tennessee last night and he said his flock is exposed to them as well and he demorms with a "special" feed that kills just about...
I love all of my girls and I feel like if one gets sick and is fighting to survive then I owe it to them and myself to help them fight in any way that I can. gander007 is right I do not have a huge flock and I do need the experience of taking care of a sick bird. I do agree that each person does...
It went very smoothly. I think I was over thinking it. I have tube fed her 3 times since we spoke last and she has held it down. YAY! The first two times I did very small amounts that were watered down as you suggested and this morning I put a little more of the food it in, but still watered...
I dont think culling her at this point is an option. There are ways around cross contamination. I have one set of I did pick up the items for tube feeding and followed the sizing, feed, and pedialite instructions. I will also add the vit & probos supplement to this as well. I will tube feed...
WOW, that is extensive! lol I guess I will get supplies for tube feeding for my get well kit as well. I just made a mash of food for her and she was pecking at it a bit. I will watch her today and tube feed if need be. Thank you for posting up all the videos, so I don't have to go searching for...
That is good to know. Both eyes are swollen now. If I need to I will treat for E. Coli after the Blackhead treatment. Thank you for this information. :)
Thank you Kathy for this information. I will definitely check the labeling if that is what I buy today. I did call the vet we saw yester and she said since Velma isn't a "patient' of her's she cannot prescribe the Flagyl. POOP! All the aquatic stores within a 50 mile radius around me do not open...
I just answered my own question about the fish zole and general cure. Both are basically the same. They both have Metronidazole. Found that info from Kathy on a different forum; Thanks Kathy if you're still reading... LOL
