    Open Contest Memories of Summer—2025

My favourite memory of the summer was hatching eggs under a broody hen for the first time. Only one hatched and of course he's a cockerell. Now he has a brand new coop, a run that's in the making and 5 lovely new ladies!

    Sick chick

I have them inside, as I think when they're outside, that's maybe how they got sick. When they were all sick, I dosed for coccidiocis no good results. They got worse. Then we wormed them a couple of days later , and they started getting better. They were a bit better before I wormed them. They...

    Sick chick

My 14 week old buff orpington pullet keeps feeling poorly. One day she would be great then she would be lethargic and not eat but then the next day she would be fine again. Around 5 weeks ago her and 8 other chicks were sick. None were eating and had diarrhea and were very poorly. This resulted...

    Hen raised vs brooder question

I think they have better chances of being healthy in the wild as they always would be moving onto new ground. But in captivity they would be kept in an enclosure and be on the same ground.

    Dry skin on silkies face!

Hi, today I was holding my silkie pullet and realised she had dry skin all over her face. It's not lice eggs, it's sort of flaky. It was covering one eye. I got a damp cotton pad and gently wiped her face. It cleared lots of the dry skin around and on her eye. Her eye is looking normal. It's not...

What colour is my silkie pullet?

The only other silkie I have is a partridge pullet same age as her. I probably won't breed her for now... as I'm happy with the amount of hens now. But I might in the future.

What colour is my silkie pullet?

Unfortunately I don't know who her parents were. I have my lesson learned to never buy from poultry sales again, even if they do have the fancier breeds. The seller only told me they were pullets. He was busy selling other birds and didn't have time to talk unfortunately. I also don't like the...

What colour is my silkie pullet?

Ooh, I wasn't sure as when I googled the buff silkies they were so much darker than she is. I have no idea what age she is but she doesn't sound like a chick anymore, my 'teenagers' cheep a little but she screams! Hopefully she'll lay an egg soon. Thank you

What colour is my silkie pullet?

Hi, I have Hennefir my silkie pullet for a little over a month and is stumped at what colour she is. I'm leaning towards a mix of a few colours, if anyone knew what colours she's mixed with or maybe she's a colour that I have not come across yet.

    Automatic door

My omlet door came today, it's great so far. I have the app to open it and close it and to turn on the light. I'm trusting that it'll open itself in the mornings, I'll be around for the first few. But I always will be there to make sure it'll be closed and all the hens are in.

    Peachick sexing

It's still early and it could change, but I'm saying male so far, in another month or 2 you can tell for sure, if it's a hen the barring will molt out.

    Hens or roosters

I feel the red one behind the whitish one in the second pic is giving pullet vibes, but I'm no expert!

    Automatic door

I'm going to go for an omlet door or the  chicken guard door, as they are the only good quality doors i could find in ireland.

    Automatic door

Hi, I'm thinking of buying an automatic door, as during winter I have to let my flock out just before sunrise. I have a few questions... What brand is best? Is solar better than battery operated? Can I set it to open at say 9 o' clock and would I be able to close it whenever I need too or do I...

How did your flock annoy you today?

My girls decided to throw all their feed out of their feeder and onto the ground, then they proceeded to scream at me to put more in their feeder as they are too royal to eat feed off the floor!
