    Ideal Hatchery Easter Eggers

My Ideal EE looks very much like Jossanne's Blondie (I can't find a decent pic of her at the moment). She lays a beautiful blue egg almost every day. I, too, am very happy with all of my Ideal birds. They might not be show quality, but they are healthy and friendly. In fact, someone forgot...

Cockerel to pullet ratio - Why was I so heavy on roos?

I'd like to know the answer to this question, too. I have hatched out a total of 18 chicks this year and at least 10 are roos (the last batch are still young, so there could be more). If the sex of the chick is determined before hatch, who is responsible for it the hen or the roo?

How do I get my hen to be broody?

Quote: I second this. Get an incubator, hatch out a bunch of roo chicks and then your hen is sure to go broody, probably to hatch out more roo chicks.

    I know it's supposed to be 50/50....

I should be so lucky. First hatch- 5 roos out of 7 chicks. Second hatch-2 roos out of 3 chicks. Third hatch-too soon to be sure, but at least 3 maybe 4 or 5 roos out of 8 chicks. I don't know what I'm going to do with all these roos. Can't keep them all and don't have the heart to butcher...

    Ughhhhhhh

Yay! I'm glad you have at least some you are sure are okay. If it were me, I wouldn't give up on the other eggs yet though. At this late in the game, it's not unusual for them not to be moving at the moment you candle them. They should be getting pretty crowded in there. Got my fingers...

    Ughhhhhhh

Well, I'm glad to see you posted, I was wondering if any of the eggs I sent were doing anything and knew you had to be getting close to hatch time. Don't panic just yet about the temp. My last hatch the temp spiked to 106 more than once and I still had most of them hatch.

Can you please try to name these chicks?

This is not the greatest pic, but this is what my Australorps looked like when I first got them. The Jersey Giant I have looked very similar as a small chick, but as she started to grow her body shape was very different, that's how I know she's not another Australorp.

    I need a cheap coop

I have seen some amazing coops built from pallets. Check out the coop page here, you'll be amazed at what you can do with those things and a lot of places will give them to you free just to not have to dispose of them. With only 3 birds to house, you could also probably get by with a big...

Can you please try to name these chicks?

It's a little hard to tell from the pics, but I think I agree with Chicky Mama that the first 4 are Americaunas (or EE's). The last two most likely are either Australorps or Jersey Giants, they look very similar as chicks. They're sure cute, whatever they are.

    Is it wrong...

Nope, not wrong at all. I turned the oven in my camper coop into a nest box and the girls don't have any problem climbing in there to lay their eggs.

    Pics of my newest hatchlings.

These little guys hatched out over the weekend, but I'm just now finding the time to post pics (darn real world responsibilities ). This is my one surviving EE mix. I'm guessing the daddy is my NHR roo. This is a clone of my Blue Cochin roo, no idea which hen laid the egg (he's a busy boy...

    "Nessie" found?

I have no idea if boats are allowed to use nets on the Loch Ness. I think what's most interesting to me is that this picture was taken by the Google Earth satellite, so there's very little chance it was staged since it would be hard to know when/where the satellite would take still shots.

    "Nessie" found?

Hubby says this is a boat, I'm not so sure. Wouldn't necessarily swear it's Nessie, either, but it is intriguing. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,543280,00.html

    I just culled a chick

One of my little hatchlings from this weekend. Was 1 of only 2 EEs to hatch. For some reason the others pecked it so bad last night that its intestines were hanging out and there was no way to save it. I took it outside wrapped in a napkin and used a heavy rock. There is no doubt it is no...

Anyone else starting eggs tonight? Hatch date 8-24

Congrats on your babies! Mine hatched over the weekend, 9 out of the 10 eggs in the bator. I had to help one that was completely stuck, but I don't think it was a humidity issue since another hatched fine on its own just a short time later. The stuck chick is doing okay, but is having some...

    Anyone hatching on 20/21st August?

I now have 4 chicks out, 4 pipped eggs and only 2 that haven't done anything yet. 2 of my 3 blue EE eggs are pipped but none have hatched yet, or course, since those are the ones I'm most interested in seeing. I'll post pics after everyone's hatched and dry. Anyone else have more hatchlings...

How old are the eggs that you sell? Best way to keep em fresh?

I don't wash all my eggs but I do use a damp cloth to wipe off the really dirty spots. I just don't feel comfortable asking people to buy dirty eggs. I also refrigerate mine because I know they're fertile and it's so hot here right now I'm afraid they might start to incubate if I left them on...

First Free Range for the chick-chicks... Was SO nervous (well, I was!)

I keep saying I'm going to let mine out and then I chicken out. There are 33 of them, so I'm partly afraid some won't come back on their own and I'd never catch them. We don't have too many daytime predators to worry about but plenty of nighttime ones. Some of my friends free-range theirs...

    Anyone hatching on 20/21st August?

Good morning everyone We're halfway through day 20 here and 5 of my 10 eggs pipped overnight. Somebody's peeping and I think it's the one that pipped on the underside of the egg. This is the hardest time for me, I just want to get my fingers in there and help chip away the shell. I don't...

    Anyone hatching on 20/21st August?

Congrats everyone on your adorable babies! I put my bator on lockdown last night and am waiting for my first pips. A couple of the eggs have moved significantly from where I put them last night and I've seen most wiggle at least once, so I am hopeful I'll have my own pics to share before too...
