1 White Silkie and 1 Black Copper Maran Rooster - free to good homes

We have a good quality Black Copper Maran roo (6 months old, NOT hatchery stock), beautiful bird, not aggressive. I'd hate to turn him into soup, he's so gorgeous. But I can't keep him with the other rooster, unfortunately. We also have an 18 months old white silkie rooster, who needs a home...

Rare Chamois Campines and Golden Campines available

A friend of mine has bred Campines with the extremely rare and beautiful color variation "Chamois" as well as the regular Golden Campines. In Chamois Campines, the black bars of the Golden Campines are replaced by white bars, which makes them unique amongst chicken breeds in the US. Some of the...

Check out the Wing Claws on this Chick!!

The wing claws seem a prehistoric relic. It was found on the first prehistoric bird/dinosaur Archeopterix. But they still exist in modern birds. The Hoatzin (a strange South American birds that is either truly primitive or an evolutionary throwback), has two wing claws on each wing as a chick...

Your own personal touch, what did you use?

OMG, you guys are amazingly creative What fun! In our household, it's my husband who's the one pushing for any structure in the yard to be pretty as well as functional! No persuasion necessary. The kicker came when I came back from a business trip last month: He had taken down the...

Cuckoo Marans VS Barred Rock... how do you tell? *Edit: Photos!*

Looks like my Cuckoo Marans. They have these pinkish legs with black pn them , some more some less black. This one looks very dark, the barring muddled. My guess is: Cuckoo Maran pullet. Good luck! Eva

Why the heck are all my hens going broody at once???

Welcome to my world, Shelly... Two Silkies, one Wyandotte one Maran and on Hamburg. Even the non-setters go broody in this place at the moment! Eva

    Intelligence of Silkies?

Yeah, I'd agree that Silkies aren't exactly high on the IQ scale... But: We did figure out that they do much better with a haircut! Ours get a fresh mohawk every now and then to make sure they can see properly. It really helps!

Sneaky Hamburg hen and Broody Mayhem

First of: I have a Silver-spangled Hamburg hen, Biddy, one of my favorites, in a flock of ~20 chickens of 10 breeds that free-range all day long. Now, according to all the stuff I've read, Hamburgs are considered non-setters. Well, about two months ago, Biddy went missing. Eventually we found...

    6 Weeks Old....What am I?

As the two Barred Rock crosses are, well...crosses, I wouldn't be too concerned about the unusually dark color. The rest of the chicken says 'Roo' to me... just so much comb and wattles and pink already. The silkie/cochin: I have absolutely no idea. Not from that picture at least. Can you maybe...

    Early developer...

Hi Guys, I have a whole bunch of of chicks running around my house and yard right now and all are raised by my 2 Silkie hens. The first bunch (BCM and Olive Eggers) are 4 weeks old now and outside all day. The second bunch (three 6 day-old Hamburgs and five 2 day-old Ameraucanas) are still...

    Cuckoo Marans?

Hard to say without pics, but all my female Cuckoo Marans were darker than the cockerels, even as chicks (McMurrays). Once they're a few weeks old, the differences become pretty obvious. All of mine were fast developers.

    what is the friendliest breed

I have a whole bunch of different breeds and here's my 2 cents on their temperament: I've handled all of them a lot as chicks and hang out with them every day. They free-range all day. Let me say upfront that they all eat treats out of my hand and come running when I get home, so the "aloof"...

    Chickies due march 19th!

So, the previous tally was also the final one: 2 BCM out of 8 eggs (1 of 4 hatched under the silkie and 1 of 4 in the incubator) 4 Olive Eggers out of 4 eggs (all incubator) None of the 6 Ameraucanas hatched, and only one even started developing. I put all 6 chicks in with the Silkie and she's...
