It's Done - Roo#2 is in the pot

Man. I've been trying to decide if I should do this because I have two roosters too many. I can't decide which one needs to "go". The little one is too little for a meal and the bigger one is a beautiful old english. I don't know if I could do it but I like the idea better than just letting...

    Is this cruel?

Interesting views! I remember as kids, one of our favorite pastime was to put the chickens under our shirts so they would sleep. We were strange kids. They would sleep! Sometimes when my chickens are upset and I need to hold them (get a sticker out of their foot, look for mites) I will cup...

    Is this cruel?

I found this video while looking up chicken breeds. Do you think it's cruel? I'm tempted to try.. yes yes, I'm sure I'll be scolded! But that's why I'm asking opinions first! I like rocking kids to sleep, why not a chicken? I just found out that my little bantam rooster I've been trying to...

    Using Our Fresh Farm Eggs

I did a search and found a little science experiment and it explains that eggs are porous and that air gets in and out of the egg. Guess that's why leaving them in water is bad? No circulation? Guess circulation is needed to keep them good? I hate throwing away those precious little eggs.

    Using Our Fresh Farm Eggs

Oh I wonder why it says never put eggs in water or submerge them? I will listen but of course I have to know why! I will just throw these out. . Don't want to risk anything. I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy eggs again! But at two tiny eggs a day, it takes a while to build up enough for a...

    Using Our Fresh Farm Eggs

So my bantams are laying tiny eggs and I decided that in a recipe, if I use two bantam eggs where it calls for one egg, that should sufice. Do you think so? Also, my mother acts like it's dangerous to eat these eggs and I'm sure yall have lots to say about that. I told her that they are...

Will a hawk still try to take a full grown RIR or BR?

I was just outside, debating if I should let the 5 member flock out for a bit and then I heard the cry of a hawk nearby. There are so many trees around here, I can't see them if they are in the sky so I guess their free ranging days are over. I lost a standard red sexlink two weeks ago as well...

3 hens:2 roos. Is this okay?

well I don't have room for many more chickens. And how does somebody go about "getting rid" of a rooster? I feel awful about it. If he went to a farm with standards.. he'd be so picked on! I don't like that at all. I may be able to get two more hens.. but that is it! Thanks for all of yalls...

3 hens:2 roos. Is this okay?

I am a little concerned about this. They are getting close to maturity and the two roos fight throughout the day. The hens get picked on some but usually manage to brush them off. Once they reach maturity, will a ratio like this kill or hurt the hens? What can I do? I don't know anybody...

Revenge was mine today GRAPHIC PICS PLEASE BE WARNED

That's strange. That cayote looks JUST like my parents dog Frankie. The vet swears that he has some in him. Before we neutered him he ran over to the neighbors farm and killed a few chickens. My mother heard about a "cure" for that... not easy, but she did it. She got one of the dead...

    Grass and Plants for Run

The subject came up under a different thread and I thought I would start one specifically for this reason. I have a fairly small run for my small flock and I let them out of the run occasionally because their run is a dusty, sandy mess. It used to have ivy growing all over part of it and a few...

Bye bye hens... what to do now?

Great Idea! I'll go to my feed store! I figure that they only sold babies but surely they have connections! Lol. It is a small country town. Geesh. Thanks all! I'll go to craigslist too!

Bye bye hens... what to do now?

Ha ha. funny smell. Sod is so expensive though! I don't even put it in my yard let alone in my chicken yard. But if I could find that special grass or weed... I would invest some! Especially if I knew it would last! If anybody knows what that is.. I'll see if I can find it! Thanks for the...

Bye bye hens... what to do now?

Oh I do have a run. I'll post a pic. But it's so dusty (they've destroyed all vegetation) and sandy.. I like for them to be able to get out on the grass (and weeds) to pick and flap around. Lol. I guess I HAVE to start out with chicks.. I don't know where to find grown or nearly grown...

Bye bye hens... what to do now?

I have... or had 5 chickens. I have a very secure pen for them (with a wired roof) but I liked for them to free-range in my backyard a little almost everyday. They got into the habit of jumping on my deck and then on top of the fence.. They must have flew over the fence a few times and I know...
