Indeed. Once you get mixed flocks who knows whats going to hatch out. Honestly i think thats why I still incubate. I am a slightly disappointed when obvious looks like the others chicks pops out.
Thought this was a interesting looking chick that hatched today. Roosters I have are a grey silkie and a old english bantam, was pretty sure this egg was from a pure breed silkie, but I have a cochin hen and a few cochin silkie mix hens and a couple serama brassy black hens.
Egg update. Candled last night at 11pm and movement was minimum with only a small section of rapid rythmic like heart or breathing. No sign of internal pip. I felt this was bad. Checked noon today and it was moving no more.
I like to open my eggs when they fail to hatch to see what...
She is inside with 2 health chicks 48hrs now. She has been inside since Sunday, I moved her at night for her final days till hatch .Im in no rush to move them. Just didnt know how long I should let them stay inside until they get cabin fever.
Sorry for the delay, You can see the caged off area to the right, but probably will move them to a dog crate inside the coop. The coop is small 6X6 ' but they only go in at night to sleep and are let out early morning. I am in middle TN and weather is mlid this time of year days 65-80 and...
It has energy. Thats good. How long has it been hatched? You might need to give water with a dropper for a couple of days, and make sure you block it in from the rest of the brooder as most likely it would get into the water and drown . I think it will get its balance in a day or 2. Had one...
When should I move a hen with her chicks to the coop when the broody hen was moved inside to finish the hatch? Chickens are free range 100% of the time so the coop was built for nightime housing only. Though off one nest box I temporarly caged it in with the top open so the babies cannot...
So here is somerhing crazy. Introduced the chick last night she loves it. That same night I also put one under my broody cochin that has been sitting on unfertile eggs for weeks.
When i checked the one i gave to the cochin she had kicked it out it was cold and looked dead. When picked it up...
Thats right on with what i was thinking. Now she is good. 1 egg thats already super delayed is a big chance. If she leaves it ill just pop it in the incubator
Just wanted to check as sure it was a quiter and candled and the air sac has grown a unmistakable amount and still lots off movement that looks normal. However i already picked up a 2 - 3 day old chick to put under her tonight. I have no doubt she will except the chick but afraid she may...
I had the cheapo LG still air incubator. Worked great on first hatch like 98% hatched then not so great on second hatch and 3rd hatch only got 2 eggs out of 14. Think its a one and done thing but it was only $20.
