I couldn’t figure out why I kept finding Serama Eggs under my Speckled hen while she is sitting on eggs for hatching. Today I found out why, she is making her way under the Speckled Sussex laying her eggs and taking off afterward. The smaller egg is the Serama egg.
It worked! Back in the flock a few days now and a big difference in attitude. She is now getting along with the rest and did not lose her standing in the flock.
Update: After three days I released her. She was fine for about four hours then she started picking on one and I immediately stepped in and put her back in solitary “just a fenced in coop in the run” maybe a couple more days and she’ll get the message.
I have owned Buff Orphintons, Sex Links, Brahmas, Specked Sussex, Black Copper Marans, Seramas, Americanas, New Hampshire’s and Cream Legbars. By far the meanest breed has been the Cream Legbars. I raised all these breeds from chicks and handled them a lot, most didn’t like it but I did it to be...
Hi there, I have owned several breeds and of the dual purpose I’ve raised the Black Copper Marans seem to have gained the weight the quickest. They are quite very friendly and mild mannered. I also had Cookoo Marans which were a little skidish and didn’t get as heavy. The Buff Orphingtons were...
I use Ortho Home Defense on the inside of the house and around the windows. It clames to be safe for animals but just in case I use it on the borders. It is a spray liquid and works well at keeping things out for about 10 months. I live in south Texas and we also have a lot of fire ants until I...
I thought you’d like to see what happens when the chickens are lacking something in their diet. I use oyster enhancing feed as well as throw in crunched egg shells and crushed egg shells. They have a run and eat weeds as well as table scraps, any ideas?
I bought two last fall to replace a couple of BO's I'd lost. The first thing I noticed about them is that they had a strong odor about them including their droppings. As they grew and stopped eating grow crumble and eating what my BO's were eating the smell went away. They started laying last...
One of my BOs just layed one of those fart eggs. If we could develop the breed to lay only non yolk eggs they would be a hot item for those people that only want to eat egg whites.
I have 4 BO that started laying double yolkers at 2.6 oz when they first started, which is expected some times at first. Now they have been laying between 1.5 and 1.9 oz eggs consistently since June. I feed them the same as I did before with layer feed in the morning, mixed grains at mid...
I had the same thoughts at first when mine were growing up. I had two that were very large and two that were much smaller. The larger ones also had the big red combs as compared to the smaller ones and I was beginig to think I had a couple of roos. Once mine reached six months they all were the...
I wish I could keep a rooster. I live in the city and I have "backyard chickens". The nice thing about it is that there is no HOA and the city allows me to keep up to five hens. At least I can enjoy the eggs and my neighbors have no basis to have me get rid of them.
