    Icelandic/Hedemora x chicks - time to start guessing :P

Hey guys, just wanted to update. All but the 2 originally suspected pullets are cockerels. 😬 I did need some boys for the freezer but I wasn’t looking for that many right away! the last little one went to its new home already but updated pics from the person who has it, seems to be yet another...

Thanks for the deep freeze Mother Nature, frostbite on feet

So far the bootie fits well even without a bandage underneath. I think I should be able to modify the hole at the back that’s meant for the back toe, to allow for his spur when it starts to grow. 🤔 funny how some of those hens have the most impressive spurs! Haha. He’s been moved into a covered...

Thanks for the deep freeze Mother Nature, frostbite on feet

Thanks for the earlier suggestions and the encouragement! He’s definitely done better than I thought he would. :) he’s turned into quite the pet now, so I guess he’s sticking around. Haha.

Thanks for the deep freeze Mother Nature, frostbite on feet

Thanks! He’s extremely sweet. Honestly, if he was a not so good boy, he definitely would’ve been culled instead. He’s a Swedish Hedemora. :)

    12th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-Along

My first hatched overnight! The other 3 should finish up probably by tonight or tomorrow morning, I think. Guess I was running the ‘bator a little hot... 😬 this chick may be pure hedemora, but I won’t know for sure til I see if it starts growing a crest or not... lol. These eggs were collected...

Thanks for the deep freeze Mother Nature, frostbite on feet

Sorry to hear you’re also dealing with such a severe case! Her foot looks very similar to what his did, shouldn’t be long before that comes off. I actually found even though the underside was sore, he was moving a lot better once the necrotic tissue was gone. I stopped soaking his feet once the...

Male duck trying to mate me😩

If you’re going the forced submission route it has to be every. Single. Time. And for a long period of time, on each occasion. To the point where you ask yourself why you’re spending this much time holding down a drake that’s a fraction of your size. It will also need to be reinforced each...

Thanks for the deep freeze Mother Nature, frostbite on feet

@Fluffy_Feathers thanks so much for sharing, although sorry about your hen. :( if this guy wasn’t such an excellent patient I don’t think we would have gotten this far, honestly. :) i also was trying to figure out some way to protect the foot without anything too elaborate, constrictive, or...

Thanks for the deep freeze Mother Nature, frostbite on feet

Well, came home to this last night. The stump looks pretty good, once I cleaned it up. As soon as I was done fussing with it, he was out of there! Haha. He’s doing well otherwise.

    What Breed? Possible gender? :)

Is that a pea comb on this chick? Hard to tell from the pic, but if it is, that rules out faverolles. Also legs, feathered or clean?

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

@LadiesAndJane sorry you had such bad hatching luck and lost the little one. :( Shipped eggs are SO hit and miss... my philosophy from now on, after almost everything I set last year was shipped, is that the most important thing is the turning early in the incubation and setting them when...

    Moulting?

No worries. :) it’s normal development, they’re just a lot more obvious when the flight feathers are coming in than a lot of the other feathers that sometimes still have the fluff attached at the end as they come in. There’s a couple of those in your photo as well. :) They grow in their initial...

    Moulting?

She’s a baby getting in pin feathers in place of her baby fluid down. :) those pins will be her flight feathers on her wings. How old is she?

    Broody duck help

My broody girl would take eggs that I offered to her. You could try to just set the eggs near her instead of disturbing her from the nest to put them directly under her. Or if she’s off the nest periodically you might be able to add them, then. If they’re truly broody often then they’ll roll the...

Using duck poop in garden beds

I deep clean my duck coop and run in the fall after the frost kills everything, and spread it over the beds. It helps with soil erosion when everything is soaked in the spring, and gives me a jump start on decomposition while it sits before everything freezes. I can’t keep a compost pile hot...

    Please respond

Some would say that it’s the best time to remove the fluffed one, when another has just hatched. The humidity level goes up by quite a bit when there’s a newly hatched wet chick in there. :) I personally haven’t had any issues with the remaining eggs when removing chicks, but if you want to err...
