Congrats on every ones hatchings so far. In about 4 hours I'm removing the turner and doing my final candle. Then its just get the brooder cleaned and ready and sit and wait. And now I want to strangle 2 of my girls. Chicks due to start hatching soon, and what do they do, go broody on me in the last 4 days. WHY couldn't they have decided to do this about 2 weeks ago so I could have snuck these chicks under them. Oh well, I did what any normal person would do who has a terrible case of chicken math and hatching fever. Tucked 5 eggs under each. If they were not first time mommas, I'd have given each one about 10 each lol. Oh and for reference on other posts on this forum I've saw people say that Black Copper Marans are not normally broody or make terrible momma's. LIES!!!! Last year one of my original girls Holly went broody at 7 months old and hatched and raised 6 successfully. This time around, one of her daughters who is 8 months is now broody and the other 2 are starting to act suspicious. Holly is in the tail end of a molt and I'm hoping she'll go broody again for me this year. She was such a excellent mother that if she does go, she gets 12 eggs this year.

That gives me hope for my BCM hen. She's not broody yet, but does pay more attention to eggs in the box. She keeps throwing out all the bedding, silly girl.

My first hatched overnight! The other 3 should finish up probably by tonight or tomorrow morning, I think. Guess I was running the ‘bator a little hot... 😬 this chick may be pure hedemora, but I won’t know for sure til I see if it starts growing a crest or not... lol. These eggs were collected about a week after I pulled my Icelandic cockerel, so they really could be from either boy... none of the crossbred ones I’ve hatched so far have been this dark though. Only a tiny bit of pink on a couple of toes and otherwise completely black skin... 🤔
