As long as it is breathing, leave it alone for a while. It’s probably just tired.
We've left it for around 3 hours, and he looks the same. I just think he might be stuck. We have oiled the membrane every now and then, but we're not sure if we should finish the assist or just leave him be. Any suggestions?

Leghorns have supposedly had broodiness bred out of them too...lol, But not my Leghorn. :gig

I'm not complaining as I much prefer a broody to raise the chicks, they are so much more well adjusted and just know how to "chicken" better with a momma hen. One thing that got me about the Marans is the claim that they were clumsy mothers with their big feet and stepped on and had a potential to squish chicks. To me that is a risk you take with ANY broody hen. And it seriously sucks when it does happen as it did this past week with my game hen. She is a survivor of being a stray wild chicken before she adopted us and survived dog attacks and hawk attacks. The hawk attack she survived let her missing the toes on one leg, just the foot pad itself. I always worry the first few days with her and her babies, but until this hatch she'd never stepped on one. This will be her last go around with chicks though as she's getting older and it is becoming apparent in the last week that I think she is starting to have hip issues with the bad leg. I wont let that hen suffer, she's been too good to me and when it is time she will be humanely put down and buried in the back yard flower bed.

Here's a picture. My dad and other sister tried to assist while I was gone earlier, but there wasn't a way to assist without suffocating the chick, so they did their best. Can you please tell us what the next step is? The chick just seems to be stuck, he's still breathing yet he just isn't making any progress.

There's no bleeding correct? Did they apply anything to the exposed membrane to see if there are still blood vessels being absorbed?

Ok I apparently read comments out of order. lol, So tell me what you're seeing as far as blood vessels. Also, was it still just a pip before they started to assist? Was the chick trying to zip yet?

He was trying to unzip, but he couldn't get far. He enlarged the pip a little, but he just stopped, and he was stuck until they decided to assist. What does a blood vessel look like, just to confirm? Do they look like thinner veins? I think I see a couple.

Yes, can you see in the picture that I posted above? I know it's harder to see because the chick was black.
