This is NUTS. It was in the upper 80s today, this is our 24 hour radar forecast..
SNOW AND ICE?!?

Yesterday it was 70 in the morning. A tornado in the evening... and snow flurries today. In a few days it's supposed to be 8f at night

8 inches plus today, and the forecast is for 1 to 3 ft on Sunday. Yes, feet.

Lois was in the nesting box after dark. Yep, gone broody. She's about 8 months old.

I put her up on the roost. I may let her sit on eggs if she's persistent.

This afternoon I dug up well rotted compost from my chicken run (#1) to use in my raised bed gardens.

First I dumped the "hot" litter in an area where I want to smother shrub stumps, prepare for planting later this year.

Then I started digging, throwing the soil outside the run, on an old shower curtain liner.

That method avoids putting weight on the door sill.

The flock loves loosened soil.

Rahab investigates the removed soil just outside the door.

Adding the soil to the raised bed.

Finished setting up two more 4'x4' beds.

Turned under the chicken run litter

Added well rotted chicken run compost to both beds

Planted so far:

Collards

We had really warm weather, so I've not been doing heavy work outside like rebuilding the raised beds. I have the blocks, it'll get done.

Harvesting carrots

I've been thinning them, these were planted in the autumn.

Irises I transplanted two years ago are blooming, appears they're all purple!

I'm fine with it.

And little Dinah is broody.

Normally she explodes out of the nest box if I approach, but for the last 2-3 days she's been sitting tight, pecking my hand when I reach under her.

I left a faux egg, not sure if I should give her a couple Sussex eggs. I really don't need any OE BB gamebird/Sussex cross chicks.

An amateur question: if you were to give Dinah (or any broody) eggs to hatch after her already being broody 2-3 days, does that still mean she will know to sit on the new eggs the full 21 days to hatch them?

Yep.

Last year Naomi sat on eggs for almost 4 weeks, but they were all dead. I bought her chicks as a reward. Dinah is one of her chicks.
