~~3 nine month old ducks that I rescued as ducklings at the end of June last summer need to be rehomed. I have a male and female Mallard and a male Pekin. I had found the 3 of them in a sewer drain last summer, they were no more than 2 days old at the time. I was planning on keeping them , all...

I too have recently read an article on chicken intelligence. I find it fascinating how smart they actually are. Since I do have 5 chickens I can see that they are smart and intelligent. I wish the "outside" world would realize this and not just say things like "....it's JUST a chicken" .
Great idea to make a little one inside the run! Maybe this spring I'll through some wheat seeds in it- was using grass seeds, but maybe the wheat will grow better.
I have 2 set up for them in different areas outside their run.
My 5 girls will be 3 at the end of June. For the past 2 years-November is the month when they start their big molt......this year and last I had no eggs from November till mid February. 2 of the 5 have started laying again .Any day now I expect all 5 laying regularly as their combs and wattles...
I have never noticed a taste difference in their eggs. For the 5 chickens I use 1 or 2 cloves of garlic (depending on the size) I put it in the garlic press or mince it finely. Then I add it to about a cup or more of cooked quinoa or cooked brown rice. I have never given the girls uncooked...
My chickens will be 3 this June. About every 6 months I bring in a stool sample to the vet. No worms! I know some people worm on a regular basis......but I figure if they don't have worms why should I be giving them medications. But I must add that I do believe in prevention....I feed them...
My chickens are going into a molt right now, as they did last year at this time too. So with the shorter days and the molt, even the cayenne would not help them. Last year all 5 chickens took 4 month vacation from egg laying. I don't do supplemental lighting, but they do get cayenne weekly...
I don't put water inside the coop. I think when the chickens go to sleep they sleep the entire night. I notice they all drink and eat BEFORE they go into the coop for the night. In the morning they are let out as soon as it gets light out.
My Australorp didn't lay her first egg until 28 weeks. And my Dominiques were 26and 27 weeks. In the picture of your Australorp- not sure how many weeks she was when it was taken, but I think her comb and wattles have to get redder.
I just looked up the recipe for the Honey Butter Ambrosia......wow it sure sounds good, but maybe a little to good. LOL!!! I am making homemade bread next week--(it'll be my first time) maybe I'll make a small batch of the Ambrosia spread to go along with the bread.
