Last summer my chicks (and coop) had a mite infestation. I used a Neem oil and water mixture to spray the coop, and DE on chicks and coop. I also switched back to pine shavings (from straw), In just 2 treatments the mites were gone. I swear by Neem oil!!
Hi All!
One of my hens was attacked tonight. We think it was by an owl because she has a pretty big and deep open puncture wound on her back. We couldn't find any other injuries on her body. I didn't know exactly what to do, so I cleaned the area a little with warm water (I didn't have...
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I guess it'll just have to be a trial and error situation. This is my first time dealing with a broody bird. Wish me luck!
Hi everyone!
I have a 3 hens of which one has become very broody. For the past 5-6 mornings I have had to force her out of the nest. She runs to the food and water as soon as she's out of the coop. However, the other 2 have begun to pick on her. They peck at her eyes. I try to discourage them...
I am pretty laid back myself. I was looking for a response like yours. You're my only response, but if there were any more I would go with your idea! I actually thought about sprinkling some DE throughout the coop. You just confirmed this thought. Thanks for your input.
Thanks Folly!
I think I will do that. There were initially only 4 hens in it. One of those died from a leg injury and 2 fell prey to a great horned owl. There's only one left of the original 4 that we got in spring 2012. We got four more this past spring. One turned out to be a rooster (which...
Hi all!
We just got a new batch of chicks (8 to be exact). We have 2 coops. Our big girls will be in one and the new pullets will be in the other until they are big enough to intermingle. I was wondering if it was crucial to sanitize the old coop before putting the new chicks in? We've never...
I'm so sorry to hear about your little chick. I would also start by giving electrolytes, perhaps by giving a couple drops at a time with a small syringe if she won't drink on her own. Best of luck to you and your chick.
One of my chicks has an injured leg. Currently I am giving her a vitamin blend that I picked up at the feed store and aspirin. For the aspirin, I am diluting 1 baby aspirin (81mg) in a quart of water (along with the vitamins). People on BYC forum are saying to mix 4-5 "regular" aspirin...
She's in a small dog carrier inside the coop with a 15 W bulb. She seems to be pretty content. I bought some vitamins which I'm giving to her in her water (along with the proper dosing of aspirin). The redness on her belly is getting better already, but I bought some epsom salt if it doesn't...
Thank you for the advice. I will get some epsom salt today. I'm also going to pick up some vitamins for her. Other posters have said that it helps the healing process. I was contemplating whether or not to bring her inside or leave her crated in her coop so she could be with her sister. I worry...
Hi Chicken Lovers! Today when I got home (at ~4:30 pm) 2 of my chickens were missing. I found one at my neighbors limping her way home. She was obviously in some sort of struggle because her leg is injured and a patch of feathers on her underbelly is missing. Her skin is very red (I don't know...
Hi All!
Can anyone tell me if this a pullet or a cockerel? You could see in the pictures that the comb and wattles are much bigger and redder than the other two BAs. You can't tell by these pictures, but his/her tail is stumpy; no long feathers. I will keep him/her regardless. Just curious!
