Looks like a roo to me, with the tail and saddle feathers, along with that big bright red comb
EDIT:
How didn't I notice? Welcome!!
Also, do post in the breed and gender forum to get the best advice for this!
What's done is done. They have the chicks now, it's no use badgering them over why they ended up getting them. All we can try to do now is make sure they grow up as happily and healthy as possible. Like I suggested above, it's still possible to give them away if the proper care cannot be provided.
In my experience, if they smell, all you have to do is give the brooder a quick clean. That gets a little bit more complicated, though, if your brooder is small. Let's say I have a bathtub of chicks: roughly 5x2. That's a whole lot of space for 6 chicks (which I had). I needed to clean that...
Is there any chance you could maybe educate your dad on chickens a bit? I don't know how much he really knows about them, as you have made it sound like he isn't letting you take care of them properly. I know all these comments are probably very stressful, and I know it must be hard asking your...
Yeah, I'm sorry those look like Easter Eggers
My profile pic is currently of my favorite bird: her name was Gem and she was an EE
Very pretty, but not what was advertised... I'm not sure I would be able to stop myself from contacting the breeder again if I was in your situation. I would be...
PURELY ADVICE:
Hmm... is there any chance you have a bigger box? They look a little squished at the moment! It's good to let the little babies have space to stretch their legs: I keep mine nice and warm in a bathtub (thoroughly disinfected before and after chicks) with a heat lamp on one...
They're going to grow so out of that box real fast! (If they haven't already!!) It's amazing how quickly they go from being little fluff balls to large, fully feathered chickens
I've never hatched anything myself, but many of the threads I have read have the humidity up to 75. I hope that by posting, I am also bumping this for more people with actual experience to see!
Now the birdies can stay nice and warm!
I hope all your chicks make it this time: I know it's difficult starting out, but I'm glad that you were finally able to get a lamp. Make sure to let them sleep, but also handle them a bit so that they get used to you!
If you can't set up 2 brooders, maybe you could put in a piece of cardboard as a divider? It could be a temporary fix. If the weaker ones are getting picked on, separation is always a good option! I don't have any experience with either of those breeds, however, so if anyone else could add to this?
If you're really going for egg count, keeping the leghorn and the sex link is going to get you more than the other ones. They are typically considered to be some of the best layers, and most eggs in stores (white) are from leghorns. Now, that's not to say that the hatchery you're getting from is...
