This is the current temporary set up. I plan on expanding the enclosed run in the next couple of weeks and getting rid of the temporary part. They are all closed in at night.
I started out with 6 hens and they are 3 years or so old now one died over the winter and since I could tell things were winding down I picked up 6 more this spring. I have since had to put 2 more down that I think were internally laying.
So I have been working to get them together without...
I am sure the grass was a big part of it. I am thinking the french drain would help I was pondering that today when I was doing this. The coop is in a slightly low spot but really the only spot it could go and maintain decent distance from the neighbors. Water is only a problem when we have...
When we were tilling the garden a few months ago we expanded it and I thought it would be a good idea to take all the grass and dirt bits and dump them in the coop. For awhile the chickens were in heaven eating the grass and bugs and digging through the dirt clods. Well we have had some rain...
My 5 Red Stars are consistently laying 5 eggs every day and our one EE was laying about every other day. I noticed today that there were no greenish blue eggs in the carton and looked in the other two that were there and nothing. I remember eating one the other day so that makes me think she...
My red sex links are ridiculously consistent got 5/5 today, yesterday, the day before that and the day before that actually in the last 4 weeks I have only had one 4/5 day. Our one EE averages a little better than an egg every other day.
I just pulled one out of the coop and put her in chicken jail in the garage not 5 minutes ago. I had one hen I know which one I have seen her do it picking the muff and neck feathers off our EE. Well in the last two days two other hens now have no feathers on their chins. I went out to check...
One of my chickens is picking feathers. I am pretty sure I know who it is. I have seen her pick the neck feathers off of our one EE. Today I noticed two other birds with the same bare necks. They are only on the necks as best I can tell. I don't think it is a fashion statement. The weather...
That was my point about efficiency. A modern compound bow at 70 pounds depending on arrow weight and other factors might shoot 300-350 fps. A 175 pound compound would likely be in the same ball park. Speed isn't everything in bow hunting either.
Crossbow or regular bow it still requires proper shot placement. There is nothing magic about a crossbow. A compound bow in the hands of a competent archer actually is more efficient and often more accurate. You still have to judge distance properly and make well placed shots. The major...
No respect I tell ya. I cleaned mine out yesterday and girls don't even wipe their muddy feet before coming inside.
I use what I call the fairly deep litter method. There was no real smell in there but things seemed to be getting a little damp, it had been a little over three months since...
Interesting we got our birds from MPC hatch date was August 10th and our EE looks a lot like yours. Unfortunately some of the other red stars have picked at her muffs and her neck is a little bare. This is an older picture. I wish they wouldn't do that. She started laying in week 20. I think...
Sorry to hear about the stress this is causing you but....a couple of thoughts. I hope this doesn't come across as harsh.
It sounds to me like it may be time to put the cat to sleep. What is it's quality of life at this point if it is as you describe? Having said that only you can decide...
You are right about the production reds being egg laying machines. My Red Stars are from Meyers through MPC. We have 5 and one EE. Since January 1st we are a few eggs short of 50. Averaging just shy of 5 eggs a day from 6 chickens. This does not include several soft shelled eggs. On top of...
