Haha, yes. Sadly those key words are dangerous Google fodder.
I did do a search here, and the posts were intriguing but many of the photos aren't working for me. The ones that did show up didn't look like our little Quasimodo.
I haven't been able to grab a photo yet. We've been in a heat wave...
Hello, everyone.
We had a broody Silkie hatch and raise a clutch of ten mixed chicks (EE, Sumatra and two of her own eggs).
Of the two Silkie mixes hatched, one is most definitely a very handsome normal-feathered cockerel.
The other... well she's very naked.
She started off normally enough...
I'm in Ontario, Canada.I do have a few interested parties, but I haven't made any definitive decisions yet. I'm still trying to find someplace with a bit of land that will allow me to keep a handful of our birds, but time is running short and I'll have to make a choice soon. :(
Sadly we are unexpectedly facing having to rehome most (if not all) of our flock. Before we became aware of it, we had hatched and raised a couple of broods of EE (F2 Americauna/GLW and F1 EE/Faverolles) and Black Sumatra.
Our broody silkies hatched two mixed eggs of their own as well.
Anyhow...
They are definitely different than what I'm used to, but they have charm. Lol
If she is in the broody mindframe, would now be a good time to encourage setting? I wouldn't mind giving her some eggs to incubate.
She doesn't seem interested in brooding any of the eggs that end up in their nest...
I was wondering about broodiness. It definitely reminds me of the images I've seen of mother hens sheltering chicks.
She's definitely a hen, as she is laying, although her size, stance and wattles gave us a lot of pause at first!
Hello!
Recently, our newest flock members (two silkie hens) have begun integrating with our existing birds (EE, Faverolles and Ameraucana and a pair of Sumatra hens that do their own thing).
They both still mostly stick together, while the others roam around in other areas of the property...
One of our latest hatch of ten. 9 EE and 1 Sumatra.
This guy is 50% Faverolle (out of our salmon fav hen by our black EE roo), and I was looking forward to the possibility of correctly sexing him by wing colour much sooner than I'd be able to sex the rest of the hatch. Well, he effectively...
Over the last few days, I've determined that we definitely have one layer. I wasn't certain who, but assumed it was the little bearded bird in the background of the initial photo. I've been leaving the eggs in the nest along with a few fertile sumatra eggs we've been finding in the barn hoping...
Thank you. I don't think the seller would take him back, unfortunately. Hopefully it won't be difficult to place him, given the lack of availability around here.
I'll see if I have a better picture of his face, and if not I'll try to grab a comb photo for you today.
Hello, I picked up a couple of silkies for my my two kiddos last night. They're hard to find around here,so I was happy to have grabbed them.
They were sold as hens and the gentleman mentioned they were around a year old and just begun laying. There was one egg in their pen, so I know at...
