It was 9 here today too! I now use a heated dog bowl from Jeffers in one of my runs and it works perfect. I have the heated base in the other run and it is a pain to fill that font up so when it craps out I'm getting another bowl!
Heated base and font = $90 at TSC
Heated bowl = $17.95 plus $6...
Welcome to BYC! I have had just three hatches with a broody but never with temps this cold. I would get her a rabbit cage for your basement and keep them there. It is going to be hard to integrate them back into the flock and I have no experience with that because mine were always left in with...

Hi there and welcome to BYC! I am not far from you, at the top of Rt. 43 on the Northwood line. It's a great hobby and you meet some great people. Enjoy your hatching experience

When we go away we have sitters stay at the house. They take care of three dogs which includes socializing with them as well as feeding watering them. We have two coops and they let them out in the am, feed and water them, collect eggs and lock them in at night. We pay this young couple $25 per...

Hi Cindy, apparently there is hope
One of my girls started squatting a week ago but the other one is still holding out. It's been pretty cold and with the short days I wasn't holding much hope.
I was up for just cuddling myself but how sweet is this?

I think it's time for new pictures
Hi Sam and thanks
I have a new iPad and cannot figure out how to post pics from it. First off, the camera stinks and secondly I have to get the adapter to gat my camera pics onto the iPad. Yup and then after that I have to go online and...
Yippppeeee! I got my first egg from one of my BBB Dun Quail hens! . Love these tiny chickens and so glad to find such a great gift sitting in the nest box.
Hopefully "Smack" is doing his job so I can have some more little d'Anvers next summer

My thoughts exactly. Every animal has a purpose in the Amaish lifestyle. Yup, there are exceptions to this I'm sure but overall this is correct for the majority. When their buggy horses get old or injured they send them off to auction where the meat man buys them by the pound for human...
Some great takes on the subject! If you do choose to cull due to lack of productivity I think doing it yourself is great. It's sad to see people advertising free chickens on Craigs List because they are no longer laying. I either keep them or cull them myself. I owe it to them to give them a...
I find the best dual purpose chickens are Brahmas. They lay well, taste good and brood occasionally. You can always add a Silkie or silke mix to the flock as your brooder just to be sure you can keep reproducing if you want meat for the freezer. Good luck on your adventure

I have bantam and LF and their area which consists of woods and pasture is surrounded by a four ft fence. I have never had any go over, even the d'Anvers stay Inside no problem. I figured I would have to clip their wings but no need. They have ample room, different types of foraging areas, and...
