how much is "chicken sitting" worth?

When we go away we have sitters stay at the house. They take care of three dogs which includes socializing with them as well as feeding watering them. We have two coops and they let them out in the am, feed and water them, collect eggs and lock them in at night. We pay this young couple $25 per night and they get to have the run of the house, eat our food, use our washer/dryer and even have a friend or two over.

I think it's a really good deal for all of us

Yay I got someone!! I have full confidence in him too, which is nice. He was uncomfortable taking money but did have something in mind that he really wanted but it seemed frivolous so he wasn't going to actually buy it- perfect! I already ordered it and so it's on its way. He's really excited about all the eggs too so it's going to work well all around.

In the past friends had agreed to come and do it but either were honest and told me (when I was 800 miles away) that they hadn't come over for a day, or once I got back home and my poor birds were hungry and dehydrated, so that's when I decided to pay someone, so it changes from a favor to a "business" deal. It made me so mad because I've watched plenty of peoples' animals for them before when they were away and always make sure to do a conscientious job of it, so these same people abandoning my chickens made me really mad. SO I think this arrangement will work out well!! Thank you all so much! NOW I can go and have Christmas with my family and not have to worry.

If it was someone who lived really close by or didn't have to go out of their way, they might be willing to do it for the eggs. That's not a bad deal at all. If they had to take a short drive, $10 plus eggs sounds reasonable... if it was a longer drive out of my way though, say, half an hour or more, I'd want to be paid a little more for my driving time, and maybe compensated for gas money too the way gas is these days...
