Mamabokbok, My girls keep planting tomatoes all over my yard too and they love eating there fruit they usually get them before me, apparently humans are not the only ones who like to garden.
Yah, I think your right torilovessmiles it looks like an ornamental gourd and it probably did come in the mulch, maple trees keep popping up all over my garden and there aren't any maples around were I live! I plain to use them as decorations for thanksgiving along with some pumpkins I've grown...

Then it's most likely an injury from being attacked. I think she'll be fine I've seen way worse, chickens are amazing healers, I wouldn't worry about it. Hope she gets better soon.
Can you post some pics. It sounds to me like frost bite, which they usually get it on there heads because that's where their most exposed and you said it's really cold so that might be the case. I know with cow there frost bite looks like giant patches of scabs.
