    Do all of you candle?

Thanks all. I think I'll wait and candle the 12th day, and again when I lock down. Maybe next time I'll just wait and candle once at lockdown. Wish me luck, hopefully I don't end up learning the hard way.

    Do all of you candle?

I'm on my fifth hatch and I'm supposed to candle today according to the schedule I have used on my previous hatches. My question: is it 100% that I should even candle at all? I assume that the entire reason is so that any eggs which are not developing should be removed so that they do not...

    Hawk killers? Liege Fighter?

I witnessed one of my cockerels charge and whoop a large, mature hawk when the cockerel was only 6 months old. At the point that I saw what was happening the melee was taking place between the hedge and the fence. The cockerel charged the hawk and knocked him onto his back and was spurring him...

Storing hatching eggs in wine cooler

I should also say that I've done 5 hatches this way now (and never any other way) and using a hygrometer I know that the humidity is near 60% and I keep it that way with a boveda 84% but that was all faulty logic on my part. Its the wind. The wind doesn't get under a hen's back in a nest. My...

Storing hatching eggs in wine cooler

I wish I had seen this a bit earlier because I'm wondering the same thing now. And looking over this I wanted to say I'm concerned after using what we here call a "wine fridge" that I know why its a bad idea. It seems like that little thing is made so that the fan blows all the time. And I...

My Liege Fighters at 20 weeks

How many did you get total? Are there other cockerels to compare to? Of all the hens and pullets I have ever seen of this breed (which to be fair is less than 50) I have yet to see a female with any markings on the wings like that. The tail feathers also look pretty long and sharp for a hen. I'm...

    I am 90% sure that's a cockerel. How old?

My Liege Fighters at 20 weeks

You’ll know by 8 weeks no problem. The males will be squeaking and their combs may or may not give them away. The larger diameter of their shins is also a give away fairly early on. Post us some pics if you get a chance!

How do people free-range their chickens??!!!?

I leave my birds out from sun-up to sun-down every day. I'm not home the majority of the day. I have had good luck with two things. A) The breed I chose: Liege Game. These make great flock masters because of their size, athleticism and disposition. I would feel safe adding hens of any other...

My Liege Fighters at 20 weeks

As far as actual flight goes, these guys that are at about 5 months can still fly 20' at about 3' off the ground with a good running start. They think that's funny sometimes when I'm coming with the feed pails at put-up time. The two keepers from the first generation (they're approaching 13...

My Liege Fighters at 20 weeks

They've got no problem clearing 5 feet. Heck, their roosting bars inside the coop are set at over 5 feet. I'm having a hard time picturing a rooster jumping a fence to get after something that's coming, they definitely aren't that aggressive, but I guess it could happen in some situation. Now if...
