So true! Since she's not quite 5 pounds yet, I'm going to wait another week and weigh her again.
I'm sure this pullet came from a school hatching project or something similar. In April and May our local chicken group gets all sorts of messages from schools who are looking to home baby chicks...
...someone here can help me figure out the breed.
I posted these photos on my local (Chicago) chicken group and it was suggested by a farmer that it *could* be a Plymouth Rock. She suggested measuring the length of the legs since Cornish X have been bred to have shorter legs. I measured from...
And sometimes even if you quarantine you'll still have problems.
At the urging of a very persistent neighbor, I rescued a little bantam rooster that was left in a local forest preserve. (This happens a lot in the forest preserves and cemetaries here in Chicago because people leave them or...
I have three the same age. While I did put mine outside all day Monday and Tuesday, it's only in the high 50s/low 60s here in Chicago today, so they have been kept indoors. I'll put them out again in a few days when it warms up. But I will not leave them outside at night as long as the temps are...
I think it depends on the dog and your training, of course. I had a fox terrier and beagle mix that I loved to pieces (RIP Sadie), but I would never let the chickens out when she was in the yard. Her terrier instinct to kill small animals was just too strong. She also would bark at the chickens...
I've been told not to eat pineapple and have several cans in my pantry. I consulted the Chicken Treat list and don't see pineapple listed there.
Anyone know if it is OK to feed pineapple to my chickens? Has anyone done so?

...is supposed to be the minimum amount of daylight for reliable egg-laying.
I'd say you'll just have to be patient. Certainly make sure they know *where* to lay by planting decoys in the nestbox, but realize that they may need more daylight to start laying.
BTW, my Delaware pullet started...
Thanks for the quick response, Jenski!
I'm actually thinking of culling the rooster in general. I have no real need for one as I don't plan to breed chicks. He's just one of the chicks I got this year that was supposed to be a female.
He really does seem to bothering the hens quite a bit and...
I'm in the city so my house is heated with natural gas. I nearly choked when I opened up my gas bill for December: $495.
I had been trying to keep the house cooler at night using the programmable thermostat and found that was actually HURTING me due to the fact that I have a hot-water heat...
Ok, this seems weird and I'm looking for some info from the more experienced of you on these boards.
I have 3 Red Star hens that are about 19 months old. They are going through their first molt now and we're experiencing the usual issues: egg laying stopped or slowed, feathers everywhere, and...
I use dried leaves in my nest boxes. The hens seem to like it and it's FREE. I just bag up dry leaves every fall and store them in the garage or under the porch.
I happened to get 2 cockerals in my 4 chick order earlier this year. (Both of my EEs turned out to be roos!!)
One of them was a real beauty, although rather loud. I successfully rehomed him with another BYCer who lives on much bigger property outside of the city.
The other cockeral may not...
Both of the Easter Egger chicks I raised this summer turned out to be cockerals. One was quite loud and persistent in his crowing, while the other only crowed a few times. I live in the city, and even though my neighbors didn't complain, I noticed the crowing as being too frequent.
So, I...
I live in Chicago, where it can get pretty darn cold in the winter. So, when it gets really cold I put dried leaves inside my Eglu coop for the chickens to snuggle up in for extra warmth. I use leaves all year round to line the nest box.
Leaves are free and easy to get in the city. I have 2...
Congrats Sequin! Definitely keep up the knitting!
Nice hat, Queen Scoot! I'm so picky about hats that I'll wear. For some reason, I find a single layer too cold so I have to make a double layer hat. Twice as much yarn and twice as long to knit, too!
I have 2 Eglus and they have worked very well for me.
I got my first Eglu last year and raised 3 hens in it. I think the Eglu is a great coop for someone who wants to get started in keeping 2-3 chickens but does not have the time or skills to build a coop. It has been a safe and cozy home for...
And....knitting uses less yarn than crochet. So, if you're motivated to save $ by making gifts this year, knitted gifts would be even better for your budget than crocheted ones.
Well, BOTH of the Easter Eggers I got from Meyer Hatchery in July have turned out to be cockerals. They are both very pretty boys, but I can't keep 2 roosters in my Chicago backyard with only 5 hens.
So, I am offering one of these 18-week old cockerals free to anyone who wants it BUT NOT TO...
Sequin, great to hear you're so excited about getting more knitting supplies!
Have you been to the KnitPicks website? Great prices on yarn and I've never had a problem getting my shipments from them. Their customer service is wonderful, too.
