I'll take an uneducated stab at it. I would think that if egg size correlates with the width and size of the hen then it would stand to reason the chicks produced would be larger although more so due to the size of the hen rather than the size of the egg. If my previous statement is true then...
Lisa, you had asked about seeing a difference between the coloration of chicks. I didn't see that it was discussed. I've noticed the same thing in the chicks that I have had where some chicks are more "red" and lighter where others have darker "chipmunk" stripes. One thing that I've noticed...
I just caught up with this thread. I've been lurking for a good while and soaking up all the great info. Boy have I learned a ton. I jumped in feet first a few years ago raising poultry and chose the SS breed due to it's disposition and beauty. I also liked the idea of trying to revive a...
I had a mite problem for the first time at the start of this summer but caught it early. I used Sevin dust on my two broodies. I dipped three other chickens that were headed to the fair in a few weeks in a Permethrin dip. I then cleaned out all the wood chips in the nest boxes and coops. I...
I''ve only incubated and hatched three sets so I'm not real experienced but if it were me, I'd let it sit and recandle at day 8 to see if you have any movement or development. If not then I'd pull it out. I only candle at day 8, 15, and sometimes 18.
I let my hen hatch in the main coop with the other chickens then moved them to a separate coop to brood only because it's easier to make sure the water and proper food is accessible to the chicks. Separating them isn't necessary though so long as the chicks can access water. Food isn't as...
My main coop is raised. My main reason was for added run space. My second reason was for shelter from the heat. It's also a bit easier to clean than my non-raised coops but not that significantly. I still get rodents in my coop and it's 3 feet above the ground. If I had to do it over again...
I've searched for the answer to this and have come up empty. I'm curious why eggs are stood on end in the incubator instead of on their side with the large end slightly higher than the little end? It seems that is a more natural position. Does anyone know the rationale? Has anyone tried...
Can incubated eggs be transferred from the incubator to a broody hen in the final days? I set eggs two weeks ago in the incubator and they are doing great but just found out that we will not be home for the hatch day. I'm trying to figure out what my options are. I have a couple of hens that...
Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I had suspected, too. I do have D-Con in my shed and in the crawlspace. Perhaps I should remove it and let the chickens and cats control the rodents.
This evening when I went out to close up the chicken coops I found my 2 year old black cochin rooster dead in the run. He was lying on his stomach with his body flattened and his head curled under. I went to check on the rest of the chickens and found my 3 year old blue cochin dead facing the...
So, we ended up hatching 3 blue silkies, 3 black silkies, and one splash silkie. None of the remaining six eggs hatched so no buffs or whites. They all appear to have died between the 18th and 21st days. No idea why. One of the black chicks appears to have some sort of neurological deficit...
I'm certainly not the one to ask. This is my third try at incubating eggs. The first two tries, I hatched zero eggs. I finally broke down and bought a Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance EX with humidifier. It's an incubator for dummies. Pretty much idiot proof it seems.
I'd say anything better than 50/50 in favor of hens is pretty good. I have zero experience with silkies but I've heard they are difficult to tell cockerels vs. pullets until they crow. I've been pretty accurate with my other chicks just by watching their personalities. I've pegged one splash...
sixth and seventh are out.
Six black or blue (I'm having difficulty telling at this stage) and one splash.
I have one splash egg, one blue or black egg, two whites, and three buffs with not much going on yet.
Update:
4 hatched (3 blue and one splash) The one I thought was black is blue.
3 pipped and one looks like it's getting ready to zip.
I got pretty good video of the last hatch.
