Help, problem with hen...... sick girl

she eats layer crumbles, a bit of scratch before bed time and leftover fruits and veggies a few times a week. Up until two weeks ago they were free range but with access to crumbles all day, but we had some company with a dog so they have been in the pen (150 sq feet for four hens, roosts and a...

Help, problem with hen...... sick girl

I have a hen with the same symptoms, just all of a sudden. She also laid a shell-less egg today. I'm anxious to see responses to this thread if there are any other thoughts.

She eats the same layer feed as the rest of the girls and they are all fine... would it be possible for her to require more than the others? and the lethargy is weird.

    lethargic and laid shelless egg

Hello.. I have an approx 18 month old easter egger that is generally very healthy but doesn't lay much. She started laying last november and then production dropped significantly over the spring and summer, for about six weeks she didn't even lay at all except for a couple of fart eggs. She...

    worm question

I just moved the water dish in the girl's pen and noticed a squiggling mass of little white worms. I change the water daily so they weren't there yesterday. The ground under the dish was muddy. Here are my questions: Is it possible these are internal parasites that came out in poo or eggs in...

2nd hen dead in 3 days to heat prostration...

So sorry from a fellow Arizonian - I hope your son is handling it ok. This heat is brutal! I have no doubt I would have lost some if it weren't for our good fortune - living in a predator free area so I can let the girls free range in the yard which allows them to find the coolest areas in the...

Austin, Texas HEAT questions and also sources

It's been 102-108 here for the last week. I put blocks of ice in their water, give them a large tub of water to stand in and put a $10 home depot mister in the bushes which they hang out under in the hottest part of the day. Seems to help a lot, they will actually stop panting when they are...

Hen not broody, not molting and not laying! Whats up?

Thats so weird. Probably she will molt in the winter and not lay then either! And so I will have a hen that lays 100 eggs a year instead of 300+. Good thing for her she is pleasant and pretty.

Hen not broody, not molting and not laying! Whats up?

If it is the heat, it is weird that it would only affect one of the hens. the others just keep on laying like nothing has changed! Maybe she is just sensitive? Hmmm... Maybe she will be my winter layer when everyone else is on a molting break!

Laying irregularity *** Update Page 2***

I know when my hens first started it took a bit for them to ramp up. And I think that perhaps in a new layer a soft shelled egg might just be the system trying to get itself working right. Are they on layer feed? If so, I would just give it a few days, you should be seeing eggs on a regular...

Hen not broody, not molting and not laying! Whats up?

I have been refraining from asking the ever popular "why did my hen stop laying" question for a loooooong time. Finally, I can say all the typical reasons are ruled out. so what's up with her? Here is the essential data: About a year and a half old EE, lays green eggs Started laying last...

Crookneck sparrow.. recovered thanks to BYC!!

Congrats, Kelly! yesterday my sister called and asked if I could talk her through rescuing another nestling that was found in her neighbor's driveway. Looks to be a finch by the pictures. So far so good! Must be the season for falling out of nests.

Peeper-pretty ugly, ha ha, that is funny! Before the fledge they really are the ugliest little cute things you will ever see! Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and advice. It has been an interesting adventure - for me and for Tordu!

Crookneck sparrow.. recovered thanks to BYC!!

Oh, I have kept him away from the girls because they have been known to eat baby birds they stumble across.. yes, eat them. Ack! Of course he is bigger now so I don't worry too much about that, but don't really want to find out.

Crookneck sparrow.. recovered thanks to BYC!!

Thanks Kay. I don't actually know he is a he, I just call him he because.. well, he is a pest. Always must be with us, always talking loudly, always must be on a shoulder or in someones hair (literally) and likes to nibble on earlobes and play tug of war with shirt collars and sleeves. Seems...

    NEED Medication Protocol....Wry Neck

I know a sparrow isn't quite the same as a chicken.. but I just had a sparrow with wryneck and I gave it two drops from a 200UI softgel twice a day (first feeding and last feeding), and two drops was at least half the softgel or 100UI. I also gave a dusting of selenium (it aids the absorption...

Crookneck sparrow.. recovered thanks to BYC!!

Thanks for the link OKrobin! So I was wondering about this today, I was doing my backyard morning chores and Tordu was riding around on my shoulder. I kept thinking - what would I do if he/she just flew over the wall? I can imagine someone coming across him and all he does is sit there...
