Cottage Cheese
For some reason my girls just seem to absolutely go nuts for the stuff!
I tend to give it them straight out of the little pots you can buy and occasionally I give them some diced up vegetables with it.
Cottage cheese is full of both calcium and protein. The calcium helps to keep...
For me 60 square foot would be a touch on the small side.
I would recommend your chicken pen is at least 15 square foot each, so of six hens you would need at least 90 square foot.
Do they have access to anywhere else during the day?
I wouldn't give them juice, plain water is perfect for them
I haven't tried mine with milk but I know that they aren't very good at handling any dairy product in excess - cheese, milk, yogurt.
So make sure not to give them too much!
Well you can have a hot spot inside the box and then other areas where the chicks can go to, to cool down. But just make sure there is enough heat and warmth to go round...
Depends on the amount of chicks, but you don't want to give them too much space because you'll need to keep them warm for the first few days, and it isn't easy with a huge box!
I'm not sure if it was bad timing, but found when I left their food in the coop red lice appeared, after I treated them and removed the food the lice haven't re-appeared...
How many birds do you have- we only have a flock of 12 so feeding them by hand isn't too much of an issue!
Ah Ok I see. No I agree with you during roaming times I would make sure they always have access to water! But mine don't have access to water in the evening because I don't want pests in their coop...
Do you find it reduces bullying operating a free feeding policy!?
Yes, make sure not to buy the cheap stuff. We bought cheap stuff the second time and the difference in quality was amazing
Won't be making that mistake again...
Sounds like a good idea, but to be honest we didn't think about doing this at the time!
I guess the main thing is keeping the foxes at bay by any means
We haven't had any foxes get in since, but I think if we did then we would place our chicken wire "out" as well!
