Ducks grow really fast! They can be ready to butcher in as little as 8 weeks. I usually wait till they get their adult plumage, its hard to butcher a peeping duckling
Poor things!! They can eat unmedicated chicken starter and be housed just like chicks. Don't let them swim until they are 3-4 weeks old or they could chill. They are really messy! So be prepared to have dry shavings/bedding on hand but their cuteness makesup for it. They don't need near as much...
Most recommend a wafer thermostat but I have sucessfully used a hot water heater therm. You have to install it very close to the heat source and you can find a wiring diagram online. Good luck!
I live in southeast Alaska, and it rains constantly! My run is covered but still had water running through it but the chickens dont seem to mind. They go inside the coop if its to wet. Keep the feed dry or it will get moldy and may make them sick.
I layer my compost with seaweed, litter, cardboard, leaves etc. I went to stir the bin and it was full of beetles, worms, and a pair of newts so I left it alone. I've started a new pile, I ran out of compost this spring so thought I should make more! My garden did great using it!
Ive always iced my chickens at least two days after processing. My first time I tried eating it the same day and it was chewy also. The meat needs time to relax, two days or longer and it will be much more tender if the Bird is young.
Last time i dispatched a duck with running loppers, it was fast and effective, severed the spine and blood vessels so it bled out nicely. It was a mercy killing, it was badly hurt by a weasal, but I utilized her for food
I live on beachfront property frequented by wild geese, I could let them hang out until they fly off with the others. My husband thinks its a bad idea but they are sooo cute!!!
My husband and I went for a Drive out the road at a Remote creek and 4 canadian goslings swam right over and practically sat in my lap! I think someone released them, one still has some downy feathers. Im worried about predators, what do i do?
I use composting worms and they love the chicken litter! I had great results and dug out over 1000lbs of compost this spring and sold half of it and made a nice profit on my chicken poop! Going to plant a nice garden with the rest.
