If you're feeding them out of a pan, I'd suggest getting some kind of bigger tray or jelly roll pan to put under it to catch any spillage ... As the rats are obviously eating something ... That's why they are there.

I prefer to use a "dog-proof" trap ... It's primarily for raccoons ... Although on very rare occasions a opossum might get its paw inside, but if you only get a "pull type" not the "push/pull" you're most likely to only get raccoons ... And not waste time on the neighbors (or yours!) cats and...
