Sorry in advance for the length; trying to be thorough.
In early summer one of my comets died. She had lost a significant amount of weight and her ability to walk/support herself. She could poop right up until the end, though she had obviously not been eating much with her inability to move...
I believe I am waiting for my second hen to succumb to Marek’s. She was hatched in 2020. The hen that preceded her in death exhibited the same symptoms and was purchased at the same time. Their deaths are a couple a months apart
I have read that a suspected marek’s case needs to be isolated...
I wondered about that because it lacked the pus plug and wasn’t the solid mass. At least it doesn’t look like the pictures I’ve seen online.
They are good with feed and supplement. One of mine is laying soft shelled/shell-less eggs. I don’t know who.
The second picture shows that the oval mass was like a pouch or pocket.
What kinda throws me is that the thin extension coming from the oval mass is tubular, and opened into the pocket of the oval mass.
She’s not laying. She isn’t pooping normally; it’s very liquify if she does it at all. But she is eating and drinking, though I don’t know if he eating is normally for her. She did devour the yogurt I gave her last night. She shows no signs of lethargy or illness in her activity.
I know this...
Thank you. Now, new question. How much for the “directly in the beak?” I have never heard of treating vent gleet this way. But a friend treated sour crop with monistat (at least I think it was sour crop), so I had been wondering about giving it to the “orally.” Thanks again.
I am wondering about the proper protocol for applying the anti-fungal cream. The most specific directions I have found said “around vent area.” Just around? Not in a very little bit? And how far does “around” need to extend? There is a large patch of mostly-bare skin below the vent. Does...
Identified as Easter Egger at purchase. I have my doubts though breed isn’t really an issue for me. Sex is though. Age is about 8 weeks.
I couldn’t get a picture of her, but the second Egger I picked up at the same time from the same brooder bin is most definitely female. Her comb is barely...
“Other” vote. I clip if/when a bird decides to fly to the top of the fence. I clip both wings because they can still get enough lift from one. I have only had to do this the first year of a bird’s life. After that, they’re too fat, dumb, and happy to want to exert themselves that much...
I have a 14-16 week old salmon Faverolles roo. He isn't very roo-ish in terms of dominant and assertive. A couple of the hens in the flock will attack him mercilessly in the coop/run if given half a chance and he just cowers. It's better when I let them outside to free range in the yard, but...
Some chickens are just "blessed" with butts that hold the poop. Feathers that stick out a bit too far. An angle in the hips or back that holds it more horizontal. And once a little bit gets stuck, it creates a net for more. I've got one that has to be washed regularly.
About 3 weeks ago, a layer came up limping. She had a scab from what looked to be bumblefoot on her foot. I excised the scab and there didn't appear to be any infection in the foot itself. It was completely healed within a week.
She is still limping. And the dog barreled through the mass of...
I treated the bumblefoot this morning. There didn't seem to be a big plug. There's a pic of the scab removed (to show how little 'garbage' needed removed) and the wound after I squeezed to remove infected tissue/palpated for a plug that doesn't seem to exist. I think I need reassurance...
A 6-month old layer started limping Tuesday. She still isn't getting any better. There are no obvious musculoskeletal issues. And I am pretty sure there's a bumblefoot lesion on the leg she is favoring. It's swollen, not quite the size of a marble. However, it doesn't seem to bother her when...
Hubby made the side walls with the correct slope.
He built the front and back walls such that the horizontal top beam had had the same slope as the side walls (by cutting the top end of the vertical 2x4 studs and mounting it on the angled cut). The walls were bolted to the foundation and...
