chicken hysterectomy -- live in Urbana, IL, want a vet recommendation

Chic Chick, She is a pet. Eggs are secondary. So to me it is a moot point wether or not she can lay. Perhaps I should be more clear: She used to lay every day. In October, she stopped. I thought she was going to molt, was reaching 1.5 years old, taking a break, whatever. She acted, and still...

chicken hysterectomy -- live in Urbana, IL, want a vet recommendation

That's really interesting...it wasn't referenced in the poultry text book I checked. I don't remember if chickens/birds can manufacture Vit C internally or not (unlike humans, who need external sources), but we can certainly supplement her. We can provide her with deionized/sterile water, and...

chicken hysterectomy -- live in Urbana, IL, want a vet recommendation

I have a hen, Dunch, who has been laying soft eggs for 6 months now. We have tried everything we know of -- calcium, vitamin D3, protein, other supplements -- with no change. She does not have any other problems except for the soft eggs. On Monday night she strained for over 5 hours, including...

    Bad Slw!!!!

I've posted before about my egg eating troubles -- you don't necessarily need to cull (unless this is strictly business): https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=173726

    And the bride wore....

Great headpiece! I included chickens on my RSVP cards for my wedding this past October (and a parakeet was on the invitation too). Congrats!

soft eggs for a month, internal laying/peritonitis? please assist

I have seen Dunch lay a broken soft egg 2 days ago; her problem is still persisting despite all of our efforts (see below and on other's posted replies). Of course, I am leaving town again and am worried about her (why does this stuff always happen whenever I'm leaving town? They're fine the...

soft eggs for a month, internal laying/peritonitis? please assist

EDS sounds more plausible, symptom-wise, but how did she get it? I only have the two girls, and this is our first-ever flock. Canadian geese do live in town, but I have never ever seen any by us or in our yard (or anyone's yard for that matter). Andwhy now? It was a very sudden onset with the...

soft eggs for a month, internal laying/peritonitis? please assist

    1) What type of bird , age and weight. Golden Buff (I think this is another name for a red sex link), 17 mo old, female, named Dunch 2) What is the behavior, exactly. Dunch has been laying soft eggs for about a month now. She used to lay extra large eggs every day up until then, very regular and...

    Wet chickens!

My SLW is fine with it, still lays (slightly less regularly than normal though). My GB has mostly stopped laying or is laying soft shells despite calcium supplements. Poor girl. Everything else is fine, no indications of it being a symptom of a larger problem. She used to lay a jumbo sized egg...

Mine started laying last Oct and went all winter, so it should be ok.

Meet Marilyn - a Splash Orp Roo and EE hen cross chick - Pic heavy

Too cute, chicks and parrots! I love them both! I asked my vet about having my chicks near my parakeet and finches and he said not to let them come into contact -- they could give each other diseases that are mild in the host species but deadly to the other, has anyone else asked their vets...

    Bad ol' Chickens!!!

My SLW is a bit more skittish than my golden buff, but she still will tolerate petting and eats out of my hand and jumps up of her own free will to sit on my arm or shoulder. I carry her around like that. At night if they are loose she jumps up to me when it is time to be put in the coop so that...

Chickens Finally Stood Still for Pics!

Too cute! They look very healthy.

Things that pet chickens do, that working chickens don't!

How about pet chickens that get put to bed every night by being carried into their coop? My SLW, if out at dusk, "must" jump into/onto my arms to be put to bed for the night. And once my SLW jumps up, my GB will actually come out of the coop so that she could climb into/onto my arms as well. Spoiled

Coney Island chickens - pic heavy

I was visiting my family in my old hometown (Brooklyn, NY) this past week and my cousin had told me that there were chickens a few blocks away. So during this visit I of course wanted to see them. We biked down and found them...it was a community garden and we happened to have come when one of...

limping, dull comb, lightly swollen breast -- worried, advice please

Thanks for the advice, I'm less worried about her now, although still concerned. She is doing better but still limping. Her crop keeps increasing and decreasing in size and seems to be firm-ish (we've had trouble feeling it with her squirming away). She is still jumping and running although when...

limping, dull comb, lightly swollen breast -- worried, advice please

In the bottom two pics I think the swelling is more noticeable, and I will point out that in both pics she is standing on the leg that has the limp.

limping, dull comb, lightly swollen breast -- worried, advice please

Here are the pictures. I know it may look like nothing it outwardly wrong, but I've never noticed her right breast being swollen before last night. She was just loose and the limping was barely perceptible, and then became slightly worse the longer she ran around. She is still eating...

limping, dull comb, lightly swollen breast -- worried, advice please

Ah ok. Didn't even notice it last night. Thanks for pointing it out. 1) What type of bird , age and weight. Golden buff, 14 months, ~5-6 pounds (haven't weighed her) 2) What is the behavior, exactly. See first post for a description of last night. She is still running around and her breast is...
