2 mos no egg, will she ever lay again?

Chickens are a herd animal and like to flock around larger animals such as cows, for example. They clean everything up by scavenging seeds, fresh shoots and bugs including those that grow in and on poo. Large animal dung is high in enzymes that benefit chickens overall health (especially...

2 mos no egg, will she ever lay again?

I wouldn't change anything in her diet, sounds like she's getting everything nature would give her. However, does she have enough access to lime or other calcium rich soils. What may have stopped from stress could be resuming due to deficiency in egg producing material. Just an idea. Hope she...

    My rooster attacked me

I wouldn't be so quick to cull him. If you are doing coop duties, put him outside so that you and your children are safe and if you are doing yard duties do that in reverse. If his aggression goes beyond protection then cull. If you are able, spend more time with your flock; a protective rooster...

    Chicken Jail

I use a product called Hot Peck (there are other brands that are just as good); put it on the tail section or anywhere else that might be getting picked on. It is an unpleasant taste for the ones doing the pecking. If this doesn't deter them, especially with Rhode Island's, raise the individual...

Do people lie about how many eggs they get??

I mostly raise Orrington's, Rhode Island Reds, Cochins and Leghorns; these breeds tend to slow down and sometimes stop during their molt which last one to two months. The winters don't seem to affect them too much, but adding light in their coops can help keep production up. (Just remember to...

URGENT!! Egg fully hatched, WHAT IS THIS?

Understandable, culling is never easy. Glad to hear the chick is still alive this morning. The longer it survives the better chance it has of making. Once the yolk sac is dried up the danger is over providing the chick has had enough nutrition to keep his strength up.

Newly hatched chick with leg problems

The chick was in the egg too long. In the future help them hatch the day after they are due. The outlook is grim for this chick but I have had them learn to work through it. It takes a lot of hands-on work to do it though. If you let them work it on their own they will most likely keep falling...

URGENT!! Egg fully hatched, WHAT IS THIS?

You can try to tie it off, but I have never had a survivor with a broken yolk sac. It would probably be more humane to put him out of his misery. Sorry about your chicken :-(

How to move chicks to coop

I just put mine in the coop for a day or two before opening the door to allow them to free range. You can transport them with a bucket if your brooder is too large to move. If you have other chickens put some field fencing in your coop to create an area that the chicks can escape to that the...

    Pullet or cockerel?

Look at their legs, a rooster develops a claw/toe slightly above the rest in the back of their leg to gain traction when breeding. At four months this may not be developing yet. Some say you can tell by the size of their combs or waddles, but that's a fallacy.

Production Red or Rhode Island Red?

It can be hard to tell, the Rhode Island Reds tend to be more brilliantly colored and slightly larger (but that's not always so). You can also wait. A production red will only lay for two years and will look all used up (dull feathers and very little meat). A Rhode Island red bull late up to...

    Eggs from a Bearded Turkey?

Most of my bourbon reds have beards (the tuft of hair coming out of their chest). One of my large females will even puff up like the Tom's. Turkeys tend to have a 50-50 ratio when it comes to male and female so it's possible that you have one of each. Observe them to see if they are mating, you...

What type of egg incubator should I buy?

One more thing, a chicken will hatch in 21 days, on the 22nd day I would start candle in the egg to see if anything is growing, if so, help them hatch. If they are too long in an egg you can get deformities and death.

What type of egg incubator should I buy?

If you're not going into production, I would do one of two things: get a broody chicken (Orpingtons, Cochins and most bantams are my preferred Hatcher's) or build one yourself. There are many DIY options online. Most things you can get just looking around your house. The most important thing...

I need confirmation of breed, and ID for offspring!

Definitely barred rock and possible australorpe; in the center, one looks like my barnevelder (SP)

Chick hatched with yolk sac attached...should i try to trim it?

NO! It will diminish soon (a day or two). Just watch to make sure the little chick isn't getting packed at.

2 mos no egg, will she ever lay again?

If they're not too old, you may want to have a vet look at her , she could be egg bound (you can check for this yourself). This took out one of my good hens.

    How long for feather recovery?

It can vary, but if you add flax to their diet it may come in faster (a month, give or take).

    Duckling is breathing heavily

I would listen the Master of Clucker. Like us, some birds like it warmer than others so if you could have a place where they can go from hot, warm, too cold (without drafts, of course) that would be best. I raise my birds in a round trough as well, this also eliminates corners and pileups that...

What's your "Dream Flock"? How many chickens is the perfect amount for you? What breeds do you adore?

Well, my dream flock is more purposeful. I love the Rhode Island Reds. They can tend to have attitudes but they lay large eggs, our great meat birds, and they are pretty. I like to raise them from chicks with my turkey poults. The little turkeys need help and the chickens are awesome teachers...
