Yes, that will be fine. I put my bucket about 1 1/2 feet above the nipples and it is fine. For that matter, I think the bucket could be just *barely* above the nipples and it would work.
I actually buried my water line and brought it back up again...but lower than the bucket. This way the...
I don't know whether it would work using horizontal nipples. As for the shut-off valve, it's there to make it easier to remove the bucket for cleaning. Put the coupling between the bucket and the valve, shut the valve and unscrew the coupling. As far as I know, this maintains the water pressure...
I appreciate the tips...frozen treats, fan, wet down the run, mist system...I'll do them all on those hot days. I''ll also make sure they have plenty of shade and drinking water. I've also read that it's good to have water for them to actually get into, so I''ll do that, too. Thanks again.
Thanks for the good suggestions. This is my first time with chickens in 40 years. I haven't let them free range yet...guess I'm a little nervous of predators as hawks are pretty frequent visitors. I like the idea of dividing into 4 and rotating every month but this rotation idea is new to me and...
Oh yes, I know. I was referring to blowing the dust around in the coop. Your exhaust fan ought to circulate the air without blowing it around. Yes, I know the fan will still need to be cleaned. Thanks for the clarification, though.
...rotating the chicken range to prevent too much build-up of parasites and disease in the soil.
My dilemna: My run space, while well more than the *minimum* 10sf per bird, is not spacious. 6 birds, run 15 x 20 (Chicken math will not result in more birds...really my goal is 3 or 4. I got 6...
...but had a difficult time finding them here.
The dust issue is why I like Blooie's suggestion of an exhaust fan.
It's good to know that shade and water should be sufficient for them. How hot does it get where you are? Here in the Sierra Nevada foothills it can get 100-105* for days on end...
Just a thought that may or may not be relavent. It is my understanding that we want to keep wild birds away from our chickens to the extent reasonable because of disease, worms they may carry.
I grow blueberries and have them completely enclosed in chicken mesh, with plastic bird netting on...
I've insulated my walls. I don't have any trees near my coop, but have an ooold metal shed that I'm going to see if I can tear apart and hang the metal over the coop and a good portion of the run. It won't win any prizes for beauty, but it's not going to be too visible, and cost savings key...
It seems that most everyone has their laying boxes in their coops, though I've seen some pictures/video where the boxes were out of the coop.
Due to exremely hot summers and trying to see if I can keep from running my fan 24 hours a day in the coop, I'm considering having my next boxes out of...
