    Annoying broody hen

My speckled sussex has gone broody. I have been suspecting it for a while. I set up the dog crate, aka broody breaker cage. I put her in last night and let her out late this am.I also took the morning eggs out of the nest. If this doesn't work she will get two nights in cool seclusion. I have...

    Cleaning the poop

Hello-I don't really think this is the right forum but.... I am readying my omlet eglu coop for winter. It has pull out poop pans and removable plastic roosting bars. Lovely design. Some droppings are hard white. Assuming it is extra calcium. But I don't know how to budge these droppings. I can...

    Vacations and Chickens

I leave my flock of 6 in a secure and covered pen. I make sure they have plenty of water through a couple of waterers and plenty of food through 1 large hanging and 1 on the wall. They are fine. I left them for 4 days (almost) and three nights.

Something you wish had been invented in chicken keeping.

well, that's the thing about the Omlet coop. All plastic so easy to clean out with a hose and sometimes a little scrubbing

Heart breaking day on the farm...

Oh gosh, I am so sorry! Have the dogs always been a problem? I had to put down one of my Bernese Mountain dogs. She lost her training, reverted to a wild animal and killed three of my 8 chickens. When I yelled at her to stop, wait, sit, come, all her commands, she just took off after another one...

    Pecked chickens

Hello! I am a seasonal chicken mom and am thrilled to have a flock back. I was late in buying chickens but finally found some. A couple of them have pecked backs which the owner said was because he kept them too crowded. Anyway-they will be fine. I have a pen and coop that is big enough for them...

    A mystery

Thanks for all your ideas. I am going out several times a day to greet them so they know I am back. Not giving corn treats except a little to get them back in the coop for the night. They come out of hiding to see me but don't seem to head toward the nest as they used to do. Oh well, I will just...

    A mystery

I have a small flock of 8 chickens. Their egg laying was finally up to an average of 5 a day. I left them for two weeks. The first week they were in their pen the whole time (two little dogs visiting). The second week they were allowed to free range again but they were quiet, hid all day. By...

    Egg laying location

Thanks! They have one nest box in their coop and always have just hung around outside the pen waiting their turn. I will see what happens in the next couple of days.

    Egg laying location

No-nothing changed. I have an 'eglu', which I love and with the loss of three hens in mid-May I close them into their coop at night. The have a large covered pen. It is one of the walk-ins that attaches to the coop. The hens have always seemed just fine with the set-up although they love to be...

    Egg laying location

I let my small flock(5) forage for half the day. Last week I heard an egg called wondering what was up spotted my mercauna coming out of the grasses next to the driveway. Three eggs found. The next day the same thing happened. She laid in the grasses. I left them all in the pen for the weekend...

    Broody- for the first time!!

I kept my girl in solitary in the boat shed in a small pen. Visiting her a couple times a day I could see her gradually settle down. On day 3, today she was eating again and cooing. I decided to give her a try and as far as I can tell she is back to normal. The only down side is that the 5 of...

    Broody- for the first time!!

She is a golden lace winged wyandotte. I have not figured out how to keep her safe at night and not have her in the nest or coop with the others. Should I close up the nesting area at night? Should I change the nesting hay?

    Broody- for the first time!!

thanks Minky! my brooder does not seem to eat or drink. I do give her food and water and an occasional cantaloup slice? I am on day two in the small wire away from the pen. No nesting material. In the shade. Last night when I took her into the large pen to go to bed she went straight for the...
