I know I'm nitpicking, but this bird was supposed to be an Americauna. Judging from the way she turned out, I'd guess she's an EE at best. She has the "beard", pea comb, and grey legs.
She is totally cool looking - to me she looks like a bald eagle, or hawk.
I suppose that's a fair trade off...
Chin up - it will happen.
Do your chickens "squat" when you approach them? Every single one of mine started squatting shortly before they started laying. Just something to look for while you're waiting ever so patiently! : )
I did have a RIR who laid brown eggs for a couple of years and then suddenly started laying white eggs. Shortly after that she stopped laying eggs altogether!
I guess you never really know for sure.
When I look at the egg, if I squint really hard and think, "blue, blue, blue" it does appear...
It was not my intention to offend those brown and white egg layers out there!
I do have two ladies that lay brown eggs (and yes, they are different "browns") and one that lays white eggs, and I have been very pleased (even though one of the brown egg layers, again, was supposed to be a blue...
I've been waiting all summer for my Easter Egger to lay a blue egg. Today she finally laid her first egg...and it was white! : (
Three years ago I mail-ordered a day old easter egger (along with a RIR, a silkie and a dominique). After waiting what seemed forever, it turned out that my EE was...
My RIR layed about 6 jumbo brown eggs/week for two years, then laid 15 white eggs, then stopped altogether until she died a year later (from complication due to sour crop). Very strange.
Thanks for all the advice, but I remain stumped. At first I thought, well, I guess they're just old, but because all three stopped at EXACTLY the same time and they are three different breeds I thought it was something else.
None are broody.
They no longer venture into the nest box.
They have...
I have 3 hens (one silky, one Barred Rock and one Dominique) all of whom have suddenly stopped laying eggs. They are three years old and had been laying eggs regularly until last week.
They are not hiding their eggs.
There are no egg stealers.
They do not even go into the nest box anymore.
I...
Thanks for all the good advice.
I only have room in the "condo" for two more without getting into an overcrowded situation. I was hoping that by getting 8 week old pullets that I would be beyond the fragile chick stage.
I will look into the "flock raiser" feed.
I don't really have a secure...
I had a small flock of 5 hens (all the same age - 3 yrs) and recently lost two. I wish to purchase two more pullets, but I am concerned about how to feed them all correctly - the new ones will require growth formula, while the older ones eat layer pellets.
I was hoping to be able to put them...
She is not in contact with a rooster. I do believe that her picked feathers are self-inflicted. She's not bloody, and the feathers aren't pulled out, they're just, well, picked at. It's hard to see in the picture, but it appears as if all the top/exterior parts of her back feathers have been...
I noticed that one of my hens had been picking at her feathers on her lower back (see pic below):
and when I dug through her feathers, this is what I found:
It is hard and looks like a little flesh colored horn with tiny feathers sprouting out of the top. The redness is from me...
That link was a great source of information - Thanks, I'll be sure to book mark it!
In the meantime, I returned my hen to the coop with her friends. She was very unhappy in the kitchen with me - would only stand in one place, would occasionally drink, and began refusing all food. She would no...
