I know right. Even with the heater it was 21 in the coop last night when I went to bed. Supposed to be a high of 13 today. Shesh! I'm hoping that it's warmer right in front of the heater (I had the thermostat on the far end to get a 'cold' reading, I moved it this morning to get a 'warm'...
You could also give dry cat food to supplement protein. I opted for a 'good' brand (ie, not friskys) with actual meat as the main (and subsequent) ingredients, it seems to have cut back significantly on my feather eating issue.
So, my general philosophy on adding heat for my hens is that they don't need it, they have natural down and good protection from the wind. But I swear my entire flock is either in a molt, or coming out of one right now. One stubborn hen is only now finally molting after a whole summer of...
although in thinking about it a little more, the 400 watt one on Shopthecoop says it will heat 75 square feet, I imagine a 650 watt one would heat significantly more space. My coop is only 28 square feet, if you include the nest boxes that extend out. 650 watts would probably be way too much...
I have no idea?! The link you put is so much cheaper!! It's a way higher wattage as well, the one I order is 250 watts, this one is 650. I have to investigate this more... I see a possible return in my future

I just ordered this and am wondering if anybody has any experience with them (or something like it). I searched through the previous posts, but unless I overlooked something the last...
Thanks guys I opted to use burt's bees res-Q ointment and lanolin on the area and it has calmed down a lot, no longer as red or hot. I think it is her that is picking at the area, I see her 'groom' back there sometimes but not actually pull out feathers, but the way the area is picked at...
Nobody??
If it is feather picking, would they pull out the whole feather, shaft and all? Will they continue to pick as the new feathers grow in, leaving stubble? Would it be hot and red skin, or just bald?
Anybody?? I lost my other favorite hen recently, and Speckle is the other 'favorite' I...
does it look like something of the hen's coming out? I've heard of a prolapsed organ, where part of her insides start to come out, if that's the case I believe you can gently push them back in (though you'll probably want more advise than just this if that's the case). Was the yolk outside of...
I'm not so sure that feather picking is my issue really, but I don't know what else it could be. I have a barred rock pullet (Speckle Hen), just under a year old. Completely healthy other than her hind end is missing some fluff. She's eating, drinking, laying, active, etc. The area is the...

I'll have to ask the King
Please do!
Sorry it took me a minute to get back to you. He said sure, as long as you give due credit (maybe with a link in the siggy line?) I've never messaged through BYC, would I be able to attach an image? I'm at work right now though, and still...
well, hubbs took the shot on his camara (which I haven't uploaded onto my computer yet), so you'll have to check out this flickr link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/25816593@N05/4380845270/... but check out the new paint job he did on my coop! It's been sitting completely bare wood for nearly a...
I had my BO hen die like this about 2 weeks ago. It's hardest when you have no forewarning. In my case, Olympia laid her egg for the day (had 7 in the nest box, with 7 hens, so she must have), and had been nearly daily, then I found her on the floor of the coop with her head under her and her...
so the basics, 7 laying pullets, pretty winter hardy breeds, BR, BO, EE, sex-links. Cold weather is setting in, highs of 15-16 today with windchills around -16. No snow (yet, but some years it doesn't come, others it dumps). Fairly small coop, like 4x8 x4 tall. 10x10 attached run they get...
so you can really just let them dry and then use them later? that seems way too easy! why haven't i looked into it before?? how long do they keep (assuming dry clean storing conditions)?
how do you dry homemade noodles made with egg? I make noodles pretty frequently, and have wondered about how to dry & save, but thought that the dried noodles must be made without eggs because I figured the egg would go bad or something.
I drank it when I was pregnant, on the recommendation of my midwife. I can't remember exactly why she said I should, but I'm sure it's along the lines of all the benefits you posted. I did it as a cold infusion, just plain water & let the straw steep overnight. It worked well when combined...
dredging up an old thread, but you ladies look like you'll know the answers . I get raw whole milk through a local coop, where I purchased a share of the cow in exchange for 1gal/week of her delicious milk (illegal to 'sell' raw milk here too, so I pay for her care, not for her milk ). I get...
So I get whole raw organic cream-on-top milk through local coop deal, only 1 cow so I know it's the 'same' milk each week. I Scoop the cream, drink the milk. I made butter once before from this cream, shaking method (just shaking in a jar for about 30 minutes until the butter stuck to the...
