I've had some ducklings hatch under a broody runner on the weekend. I came back from a party on Sunday to find the ducklings in the pond, 4 of them afloat and 3 of them drowned.
The mother was on the shore not helping at all, just going spastic when I go there to help them out of the pond. I...
I had a flock of chickens that started eating their own eggs. I would find dried up egg yolk in their nesting boxes and sometimes empty shells.
I killed all my chickens in that flock except for one which I hoped wasn't doing it because I was seeing it's eggs. So I had one chicken from my old...
leguminous cover crops for me, trying to fix some really horrible heavy clay soil that I want to use for row cropping. I only cultivated the surface of the bed with a 3 tyne cultivator as the soil was too hard to use a plough at seeding. Also I'm trying to avoid the hardpan that using a...
not lions mane, that is a yellow pored mushroom. It probably belongs to the genus Boletus but I can't tell you the species name. you probably don't have the mushroom anymore but you could use this key to ID it https://www.mushroomexpert.com/boletes.html . with that photo I can't tell if it has a...
My runner duck does a similar thing. It gets nervous when I get to near it or even when I look at it then it will start to back away and go somewhere else. Only when the chickens are hanging near to me for reason then the duck will be more relaxed.
Then again my chickens are easily spooked...
Pretty neat eh? The hose is connected to the outlet of the bath tub, which can be used to 'fertigate' trees/crops with fertile irrigation water!
got the idea from here https://goodlifepermaculture.com.au/fertigation/
I lost the plug to the bath tub and had to improvise that's why the hose is...
I've got a small cat not even fully grown yet. I've got 2 araucana bantams and 3 full size chickens. I used to have a maran rooster and my cat would chase and hassle all of them.
The rooster didn't even attempt to defend itself or the flock against the cat. Pretty annoying because it...
Currently have 8 chicks being raised by 2 mothers. They are locked away separately in a small triangular frame chicken tractor.
When I can supervise them I let them out to free-range with the other 3 chickens. It's a pain though having to refill separate food and water. Because it's a small...
Haven't got 8 chickens yet only 5 but it's plenty big for a dozen. They only sleep and lay eggs there, they free range all day and have about 100m2 of space.
No problems with predators at all, though my cat chases them around sometimes. This works for my situation, if you have predators a solid...
Just wondering what the best breed would be for the average backyard chicken raiser without acerage assuming they can have a rooster. I'm thinking it would probably be a particular breed that has a high sale price and is high in demand. It would have to generate the most amount of money on a...
I'm looking at getting a minituare sheep for my backyard sometime in the future, once some trees grow so I can be discreet about it. Babydoll Southdown is one of the three breeds of minituares here in Australia, and that particular breed interests me the most because it produces wool (needs...
The black chick in this photo is supposed to be an olive egger. It's fully grown now, I'll upload a more recent photo later. Just wondering how come some olive eggers are black? I don't get how crossing an aracauna and a maran produces a black chicken
These ones are all only about 3-4 months old, I slaughtered all my old quail I just kept and hatched their eggs. Males aren't a problem either I have one male per 6 hens in both cages. Must be that I hatched them at just the wrong time that the daylight hours got too short before they were...
...production animals people are raising in their backyards and what for. And also what you plan on getting in the future.
At the moment I have:
* Chickens - 5 hens and 1 rooster raising for eggs
* Quails coturnix - 12 hens and 2 roosters, split into two cages one for growouts for slaughter...
I've raised up 14 quail from my own eggs and from purchased day olds. They are now about 3-4 months old and have not laid a single egg between them. I have raised quail for about 3 years now, but I'm new to brooding/hatching so I haven't had this problem before. I have been feeding them my usual...
Nesting boxes built
Added some roosts mostly from scrap wood. I did buy 2m or so of thick oak dowel which was very expensive. I put some chicken wire on the bottom underneath the bottom of the pallet edges and secured with the staples you hammer in. Screwed in some planks from pallets on...
No. Would you pay more for a coloured egg for eating? Just charge whatever other people in your area charge, some people have signs out the front of there house with a price.
You can charge a bit more if they are free-range and/or organic, that is what people are willing to pay for. In my area...
I put the 4th chick under her during the day time yesterday. It worked fine she accepted it no problems at all. Here's a photo of all 4 of them together.
Why is one chick black and the others yellow? I hatched 2 OE eggs and 2 maran eggs shouldn't there be 2 of each colour??
Also I tried...
