Crowing this morning...it is official...we have a roo! Now we need to seperate him and a few girls we have 8 Brahmas and 7 Orppingtons ( he's an Orp) any suggestions on how to seperate them? The second coop can house 4-6 birds. If we leave 2-3 Orp will the Brahmas pick on them? Thanks!
Seventeen nine week old chicks and the only one we can tell apart is "Jeffry" (my son named him) and that is because his comb is big and red. Leg bands maybe? I joked about a dot of nail polish with a corresponding chart...but I don't have 17 different colors!
I just read that they sneeze after giving treats if they eat fast from hitting their beaks. As they had just finished a piece of fish...I work at a fish fry once a week so bring home the left overs which they love...so what do u think should I just treat the eye and watch everyone else for sneezing?
So I went out to feed the chicks this morning and noticed one with an eye that was closed and wouldn't seem to open. Then as one was sitting on my shoulder I noticed it sneezing some. What should I do? They are five weeks old. I did a search on eye injury and then resp infections...scared me...
New here so just a thought...use it! I already wish I had more storage space and my coop is brand new! Besides it seems like chicken math will get the best of us!
11 year old son "Can I go see the chickens?" Me "yes be sure to lock up and if the treat tray is empty bring it out- I gave them some strawberries" Son " they are eating my perfectly good strawberries?" Me " yes" When will he get that hes got 16 sisters and a brother?!
Took us about fifteen minutes. I love our orppingtons..much calmer than the brahmas. First night in and they love it. Plenty of running jumping and flying. Of course I didn't sleep so good...was worried about them! Now we just wait for soome eggs...and we need to decide on the free rooster they...
Chicks headed to their new coop! Got to go catch 17 of them out of the broodet...this should be fun! Pictures coming soon! So excited...no more dust in the house and more room for them!
Oops I meant in my post that I forgot to mention that we were going to attach chicken wire around the bottom of our kennel to keep the babies in. I've read that they can fit through the chainlink. For the predator proofing we are using hardware cloth. Sorry about the confusion still new to posting!
Awesome idea! Looks like I need to go buy more seeds to share with the chicks! Off topic a little but does anyone randomely put shovel fulls of compost in their runs for the girls to get at? Unfortunately we can't free range but I am an avid composter.
